Senior Danielle Iceman tallied a team-high 11 points while freshman Stephanie Cherry tied her season-high with 10 points but the Sacramento State women’s basketball team fell to Weber State, 47-43, in a Big Sky Conference game Saturday evening at the Hornets Nest.Sacramento State dropped to 1-16 overall and 1-3 in the Big Sky while Weber State improved to 9-8, 3-1.
Iceman led the Hornets in scoring for the fourth time this season after shooting 3-of-8 from the floor and 5-for-6 from the free-throw line. The native of Redding, Calif., also tied the team high with six rebounds. Iceman currently leads the squad with two double-doubles on the year.
Cherry, a native of Fairfield, Calif., tied her season best in points after going 4-for-13 from the field including a 1-for-5 effort from behind the three-point line. Cherry’s other 10-point performance came against North Carolina State on Nov. 28. She also set a new season high with three steals in the contest. Junior Alyson Thurman also tallied a team-high six rebounds.
Julie Gjertsen led Weber State with a game-high 16 points on 4-of-14 shooting, including a 3-for-8 performance from behind the arc, and a 5-for-6 effort from the charity stripe. Gjertsen and Becky O’Neil each added a game-high eight rebounds to lead the Wildcats.
As a team, the Hornets finished 17-of-55 (.30.9) from the floor compared to Weber State’s 16-for-54 (.296) performance. The Hornets were out-rebounded by the Wilcats 45-to-38. WSU did win at the free-throw line by converting 8-of-11 (.727) compared to 7-of-15 (.467) by the Hornets. It marked the ninth time this season in which the Hornets have held their opponent to less than 40.0 percent shooting from the field.
In the first half, Weber State jumped out to an 8-2 advantage at the 14:10 mark before Sacramento State used a 9-2 run to lead, 11-10, with 9:07 remaining. The two teams exchanged leads four times before the Wildcats went on a 4-0 run to lead, 22-18, at the half.
In the second half, Weber State opened the period with a 4-0 run to take its largest lead of the contest (27-18) at the 18:49 mark. Sacramento State evened the contest at 27-27 (12:34) after Cherry nailed a free throw to finish a 9-1 run. The Hornets captured their first lead of the second half when junior Kristine Knowlton tipped in a rebound to make it 31-30 with 8:56 remaining. Weber State regained control with a 10-2 run to make it 40-34 (6:01). The Hornets tied the game with an 8-3 run (43-43) with a lay up by Cherry after making a steal at the top of the key. With 11 seconds remaining, Angela Sampson collected an offensive rebound and sank a five-footer to put the Wildcats up 45-43. Sacramento State had a chance to answer on its next possession but a 10-foot jumper by junior Tyeisha Brown didn’t fall and Gjertsen sank two free throws to end the contest.
Sacramento State will next travel to Montana State on Thursday, Jan. 29, at 6:05 p.m. PST before completing their week at Montana on Saturday, Jan. 31, at 6:05 p.m. PST.
