UDY’S BUZZER BEATER GIVES IDAHO STATE WIN OVER WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Merrilee Udy’s off-balance three-pointer with 0.6 seconds remaining in the game gave Idaho State a 70-67 victory over Sacramento State in a Big Sky Conference women’s basketball game Saturday evening at the Hornets Nest.

After a three-pointer by the Hornets’ Sarah Craig tied the score at 67-67, Idaho State had the ball with 26 seconds left. The Bengals ran the clock down to five seconds before the Hornets forced a loose ball that fell right into Udy’s hands with two seconds left. Udy quickly heaved up the three-point attempt that went in with 0.6 seconds to play. The Hornets had a chance to tie, but Craig’s halfcourt desperation three-point attempt fell short as the buzzer sounded.

Idaho State snapped a seven-game losing streak as the team improved to 6-17 overall and 2-9 in the Big Sky. Sacramento State, which was trying to snap a 34-game losing streak against Big Sky competition, dropped to 2-22 and 0-11 in the conference. The Hornets have now lost a season-high 12-straight games.

Both teams played evenly throughout the contest as Idaho State’s largest lead was eight points (with 5:09 left in the second half) and Sacramento State’s was five points (at the 17:40 mark of the second half. With Idaho State leading, 63-55, with 5:09 remaining, Sacramento State went on a 12-4 run to tie the score before Udy’s three-pointer at the buzzer.

Idaho State outrebounded the Hornets, 44-32, including numerous second-chance points off 17 offensive rebounds. The Bengals attempted seven more shots than Sacramento State (63-56) and shot 41.3 percent (26-63) from the field. Conversely, the Hornets shot 42.9 percent (24-56) from the floor while committing 15 turnovers.

The Bengals’ Ashley Toner led all players with 21 points while Ashley Thurman (11 points), Heidi Gifford (11 points) and Laraine Skow (team-best 11 rebounds and seven assists) also chipped in. Udy’s only points of the game came on her three-pointer.

For the second-straight game, Sacramento State was led in scoring by Danielle Iceman as the junior finished with 16 points on 8-of-11 shooting. Junior Sydney Gatson added 14 points while Craig chipped in with 13. Junior Diane Peterson recorded a career-high 12 assists which tied the Sacramento State Div. I single-game record as Heather Baker tallied 12 assists against Fresno State in 1991.

The Hornets’ 42.9 percent shooting from the field was the team’s fifth-best mark of the season. Sacramento State also converted on five three-pointers (including a career-high three from Gatson) which tied for the second-best mark of the season.

Sacramento State makes its final road trip of the season next week as the team faces Montana (Thursday, Feb. 27, at 6:35 p.m. PST) and Montana State (Saturday, Feb. 29, 6:05 p.m. PST). The Hornets, who have just three games left on the schedule, wrap up the season at home on Saturday, March 8, against Northern Arizona.
