SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Junior guard Diane Peterson was named Big Sky Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week after leading Sacramento State to a 1-1 record last week, including a 44-point win over San Jose Christian. The San Rafael, Calif., native averaged 15.5 points, 6.0 assists, 4.0 rebounds and 3.5 steals while shooting 58.8 percent (10-17) from the floor, including 7-of-14 (.500) from beyond the three-point arc and 4-of-4 (1.000) from the charity stripe.
In the Hornets’ victory against San Jose Christian on Thursday, she set or matched career highs in points (19), rebounds (seven), assists (seven), steals (five) and three-pointers made (five). The first-year transfer from College of Marin went 7-of-11 from the field, including 5-of-9 from beyond the three-point line in 26 minutes.
She followed up that effort with 12 points, five assists and two steals in a loss to San Diego State on Saturday. She went 3-of-6 from the field, while knocking down a pair of three-pointers.
Peterson, who is the only Hornet to start all 13 games this season, has buried at least one three-pointer in all but one game this season. At her current pace, she would finish the year with 56 three-pointers, a mark which would place her second in Sacramento State single-season history.
Among team leaders, Peterson is currently first in three-pointers made (27) and assists (40), and third in scoring (8.7 points per game) and steals (15). She is also third in the Big Sky in three-pointers made per game (2.08) and fourth in three-point field goal percentage (.290).
Peterson becomes the first Sacramento State women’s basketball player to garner the Big Sky player of the week award since Torilynn Boyd accomplished the feat on Jan. 2, 2001.
Sacramento State (2-11) opens up Big Sky Conference play this week as the team hosts Portland State (Thursday, Jan. 16) and Eastern Washington (Saturday, Jan. 18).
