IDAHO STATE USES BIG SECOND HALF RUN TO DEFEAT WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

POCATELLO, Idaho — Idaho State began the second half on a 27-10 run and never looked back as the Bengals defeated Sacramento State, 75-49, in a Big Sky Conference women’s basketball game Saturday evening in Holt Arena.

The 27-10 run broke open what had been a 27-20 Idaho State halftime lead.

The Bengals snapped a seven-game losing streak while improving their record to 9-13 overall and 2-7 in the Big Sky. Sacramento State dropped to 0-22 and 0-9 in the conference as the Hornets have now lost 32-straight games dating back to last season.

Three Bengals scored in double figures, led by Mandi Carver’s 15 points and game-high eight rebounds. Cassie Bro (12) and Laraine Skow (12) also scored in double figures for Idaho State, which shot 57.7 percent (15-26) from the floor in the second half. The Bengals, which also outrebounded the Hornets, 56-31, outscored the Hornets, 48-29, in the second half.

Sacramento State, which shot just 30.4 percent (17-56) from the field while committing 23 turnovers, was led by sophomore Sydney Gatson’s game-high 16 points. Sophomore Ayson Thurman (12 points) and freshman Kristine Knowlton (10 points, six rebounds) also chipped in for the Hornets.

Idaho State jumped out to a quick 8-1 lead at the 17:15 mark of the first half as Carver scored five points during the run. Sacramento State responded by going on a 9-0 run over the next eight minutes to take a 10-8 lead with 9:09 remaining.

The Bengals then went on a 16-4 run to take a 22-14 lead (5:57), highlighted by three three-pointers from Scow. Both teams traded buckets for the remainder of the half, including a running jumper by Idaho State’s Tiffany Williams as the first half buzzer sounded. Both team shot a combined 25.0 percent (16-for-64) in the first half (Sacramento State 21.6 percent, Idaho State 29.6 percent).

Idaho State began the second half on a 27-10 run to take a commanding 54-30 lead with 10:01 remaining in the contest. Sacramento State would get no closer than 19 points the rest of the way. The 26-point victory marked the largest lead of the night for the Bengals.

Sacramento State returns to action next week as it hosts Northern Arizona on Saturday, Feb. 16, at 7:05 p.m. in Hornet Gym.
