SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Portland State jumped out to an early 20-2 advantage and never relinquished the lead the rest of the way as the Vikings defeated the Sacramento State women’s basketball team, 67-45, in a Big Sky Conference game Friday evening in Hornet Gym. With the victory, Portland State improved to 9-11 overall and 3-4 in the Big Sky. After dropping their first four conference games of the season, the Vikings have now won three straight. Sacramento State, which was down, 30-9, at halftime, fell to 0-19 and 0-6 in the conference.
The Hornets committed 19 turnovers and converted on just 4-of-22 attempts from the field in the first half. Sacramento State had just two points through the first 12:58 of the opening period as the team’s nine points in the half was a season low. After trailing early on, 20-2, the Hornets could get no closer than within 16 points of the Portland State lead the rest of the way.
For the game, Portland State shot 36.1 percent (22-61) from the field and outrebounded the Hornets, 50-43. The Vikings held the Hornets to 27.1 percent (16-59) shooting from the field and forced Sacramento State into 26 turnovers.
Portland State’s Nikki Petticrew led all players with 19 points while Sarah Hedgepeth (11) and Heidi Stuart (11) also finished in double figures for the Vikings. Hedgepeth and Niki Sadowski each finished with a team-high eight rebounds.
Sacramento State was led by junior Samantha Miller who scored 14 points on 4-of-10 shooting. Freshman Kristine Knowlton finished with career highs in both blocked shots (six) and rebounds (14). Senior Lori Kerswell finished with 10 points and sophomore Sydney Gatson chipped in with nine. Gatson has now scored at least nine points in five-consecutive games.
After being outscored by 21 points in the first half, Sacramento State was outscored, 37-36, in the second half. Portland State’s largest lead of the night was 27 points.
The Hornets have now lost 29-straight games dating back to last season.
Sacramento State returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 2, as it hosts Eastern Washington at 7:05 p.m.
