DOSTY TWINS TOO MUCH AS WOMEN’S BASKETBALL FALLS TO SAINT MARY’S

MORAGA, Calif. -- Jermisha and Jerkisha Dosty scored 19 points apiece to pace the Saint Mary’s women’s basketball team to an 88-51 non-conference victory over Sacramento State Saturday night at McKeon Pavilion.

With the win, Saint Mary’s improved to 6-6 overall and is now 11-0 against Sacramento State since the Hornets joined the Div. I ranks in 1991. Sacramento State dropped to 0-13 with the loss.

Saint Mary’s had four players score in double figures. Leading the way were the Dosty twins as they notched double doubles in the same game for the first time all season. The 19 points by the twins were game highs while Jermisha grabbed 11 rebounds and Jerkisha pulled down 10. Combined, they shot 15-for-27 from the floor. Natalie Kelly added 16 points while grabbing eight rebounds.

Sacramento State jumped out to a quick 6-2 lead before Saint Mary’s used an 18-0 run to take a 20-6 lead at the 10:48 mark of the first half. The Gaels would increase the lead to as many as 20 points in the first before taking a 41-27 lead into halftime.

Jermisha Dosty had the hot hand for Saint Mary’s in the opening session, scoring 15 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the floor. The Gaels posted a 51.4 shooting percentage in the half while holding the Hornets to 32.4 percent from the field.

Sacramento State opened the second half with a 9-0 run to cut the Gael lead to 41-36 at the 17:19 mark. With Saint Mary’s leading, 50-40, at the 14:55 mark, the Gaels went on another huge run, 24-6, to open a commanding 74-46 lead with 7:00 to play. The Hornets mustered just three free throws and one basket over the final seven minutes as the Gaels cruised to the 37-point victory.

Saint Mary’s shot 46.5 percent (33-71) from the floor while holding the Hornets to 30.3 percent (20-66). The Gaels also dominated the boards, outrebounding Sacramento State, 55-41. The Hornets were whistled for a season-high 23 fouls as Saint Mary’s went to the free throw line 32 times, converting on 19 of those opportunities.

The Hornets were led by Danielle Iceman’s 16 points as the sophomore finished 7-of-11 from the floor, including one blocked shot and five rebounds. Junior Kendra Yancey added eight points and a team-high 11 rebounds. Yancey’s 11 boards snapped a string of seven-consecutive games in which Alyson Thurman had led the team in rebounding. Junior Samantha Miller (nine) and Thurman (eight) rounded out the Hornets’ top scorers.

Sacramento State opens up its Big Sky Conference portion of the schedule next week as it welcomes both Idaho State (Friday, Jan. 11, 7:05 p.m.) and Weber State (Saturday, Jan. 12, 7:05 p.m.) into Hornet Gym.
