SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Katie Macfarlane posted a team-high 22 points and 13 rebounds to lead Army to a 64-59 victory over Sacramento State in a non-conference women’s basketball game Monday afternoon at Hornet Gym.

Army, who trailed just once during the entire contest (11-9 at the 15:02 mark of the first half), won its third game in a row while improving to 4-7. Sacramento State dropped to 0-11. The five-point loss was the Hornets’ narrowest margin of defeat this season.

Sacramento State was down 12 points with 2:39 remaining in the contest, but went on a 7-0 run to slice the lead to five (62-57) with 36 seconds remaining. Kendra Yancey, who recorded a career-high 28 points in the game, scored all seven points of the run including three-pointers on consecutive possessions.

Sacramento State had one opportunity to draw closer than five points, but turned the ball over with 33 seconds to play. After a Haley Edwards’ free throw extended the Army lead to six (63-57) with 30 seconds remaining, the Hornets missed three-consecutive shots on the ensuing possession. The Black Knights added a free throw before Yancey closed the scoring with a lay-up.

Yancey’s 28 points came on 9-of-18 shooting, including four three-pointers and a team-high five assists. Alyson Thurman added 14 points and a team-best eight rebounds as the sophomore has now led the Hornets in rebounding in six-consecutive games. Sacramento State shot 40 percent (24-60) from the field while recording season highs in field goals (24) and assists (18).

Army shot 42.6 percent (16-27) from the field, but went to the free throw line 19 more times than Sacramento State. The Black Knights converted on 18-of-29 free throws while the Hornets knocked down 7-of-10 from the charity stripe. Macfarlane’s 22 points came on 7-of-12 shooting, including 8-of-12 from the free throw line. Helu Halaevalu added 17 points as she combined with Macfarlane for 39 of the team’s 64 points.

Yancey’s output accounted for half of the Hornets’ 59 points and was the largest scoring output by a Sacramento State player this season.

The Hornets close out their three-game homestand this Wednesday, Jan. 2, against Gonzaga at 7:05 p.m.
