WOMEN'S BASKETBALL WINS AT CSU BAKERSFIELD
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The Sacramento State women’s basketball team notched its first win of the season with a 79-72 victory over CSU Bakersfield in a non-conference game on Friday night at the Icardo Center.
Fantasia Hilliard had a career-high 11 assists in the Hornets' win at CSUB.
The Hornets (1-2) used a big second half to defeat the Roadrunners (1-2) for the second straight season. CSU Bakersfield led by as much as eight in the first half and held a two-point lead at the break, but Sacramento State outscored the Roadrunners by nine in the second half. The Hornets took the lead, 60-57, on a three-pointer by Se’nyce Parrish with 10:22 remaining in the game and never trailed again. The win prevented the Hornets from starting out 0-3 for the fourth straight year.
Sacramento State went 28-of-65 from the field and took a season-low nine three-pointers. The Hornets took 25 three-pointers in each of their first two games.
“They didn’t let our shooters take a lot of threes but we did a good job of getting into the lane and taking what the defense gave us,” head coach Jamie Craighead said. “We were not perfect but we played well on both ends of the floor.”
The Hornets had five players score in double figures, led by Fantasia Hilliard and Alle Moreno, who each scored 18 points. Hilliard notched her second career double-double with a career-best 11 assists.
“Fantasia really led our team tonight,” Craighead added. “She had total command of the game and when she does that, our team really settles in around her.”
After ranking third in the NCAA last season with 21 double-doubles, senior Kylie Kuhns notched her first this season with 12 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. Kuhns also added four blocks. Senior Megan Kritscher had another strong game in her second season with the Hornets, with 10 points, six rebounds and a game-high five blocked shots. Parrish was the fifth Sacramento State player in double figures, with 10 points.
CSU Bakersfield was paced offensively by Tyonna Outland’s 17 points while Cebrina Johnson had 16 points off the bench. Batabe Zempare had a team-high 12 rebounds.
Sacramento State shot 43.1 percent overall on 28-of-65 shooting, including 5-of-9 from three-point range. The Hornets snagged 49 rebounds, committed 20 turnovers and tallied 16 assists. They went 18-of-28 at the free throw line. Hilliard was 7-of-9 at the charity stripe.
CSU Bakersfield shot just 34.2 percent from the field on 26-of-76 shooting, with 5-of-18 coming from beyond the arc. The Roadrunners grabbed 46 rebounds and were pressured into 17 turnovers with 14 assists. They went 15-of-20 at the free throw line.
Sacramento State returns home for its next two games with Utah Valley and San Francisco visiting The Nest.
