SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The Sacramento State women's basketball program
announced today that a pair of student-athletes, Reshundra Smiley and
Ebonie Kerley, have signed National Letters on Intent and will enroll
as freshmen at Sacramento State in the fall of 2001.
Smiley and Kerley mark the first two Sacramento State signees of the
year. The pair also marks the first signees by head coach Carolyn
Jenkins, who took over the women's basketball program on May 30 of
last year.
Smiley, a 5-8 shooting guard from Ceres, Calif., was named the
Modesto Bee High School Player of the Year and Central California
Conference MVP last season as a senior after leading Ceres High
School to a share of the conference title. Smiley posted averages of
19.3 points and 4.5 steals per game while converting on 54-of-162
(.333) three-point attempts.
Smiley, who will also run track at Sacramento State, was the
Sac-Joaquin Section 100-meter dash champion during her junior year
and the 200-meter dash champion during her sophomore year.
"Reshundra will greatly enhance the level of athleticism on our
team," Jenkins said. "Her quickness is matched by very few people in
the country. Her three-point shooting combined with her speed could
be a deadly combination for opponents."
Kerley, a 6-0 small/power forward from San Diego, was a first team
all-Harbor League selection during her final three seasons at Hoover
High School. Kerley guided Hoover to a pair of league championships
in 2000 and 2001 while averaging 13 points, nine rebounds, six steals
and three blocked shots per game as a senior.
A member of the honor roll during both her junior and senior years,
Kerley will play small forward for the Hornets.
"The sky is the limit for Ebonie in terms of her potential," Jenkins
said. "She's six feet tall, very athletic and has the ability to
shoot the three. She's a quality individual who's in great standing
academically.
"All around, she is a symbol of what this program hopes to bring
aboard in the future."
