Bill BaxterTitle: Assistant Coach Experience: Fist Season Alma Mater: UC Davis, 1973 Email:w.baxter@csus.edu Bio: Assistant coach Bill Baxter enters his second year with the Hornets for the 2012-13 season.
A defensive-minded coach, Baxter’s primary responsibilities include on-floor coaching and defensive strategies. He also serves as the summer team camp coordinator, assists in local recruiting, opponent scouting and post play development.
Under Baxter’s guidance in his first season, the Hornets’ defense allowed 7.7 points per game less in 2011-12 than in the 2010-11 season.
Before joining the Hornets, Baxter developed a strong winning reputation in the Sacramento region as head coach at El Camino High School. Baxter, who tallied a Sac-Joaquin Section record 601 career wins, coached the Eagles for 24 years and took his team to the playoffs each season.
His teams at El Camino won 14 league titles, five Sac-Joaquin Section championships and made 10 section title game appearances. He took his teams to five NorCal championship games, winning three titles, while his 1993-94 squad went a perfect 36-0 en route to a CIF state championship. In his last season (2010-11), Baxter coached El Camino to the semifinals of the section playoffs and advanced to the second round of the CIF playoffs.
While at El Camino, Baxter coached current women’s basketball assistant coach Jourdan Willard.
In addition to coaching women’s basketball for the Eagles, Baxter was the water polo and swimming coach from 1974-87, where he won a combined 31 league titles with the men’s and women’s teams in the two sports. He started teaching at El Camino in 1974 and ascended to the school’s athletics director position in 1994.
Baxter is a 1973 graduate of UC Davis. He coached the freshman men’s basketball team at his alma mater from 1972-74 and was also an assistant coach for the Cosumnes River College men’s basketball team from 1974-76.
Baxter and his wife Michelle, a teacher at Oakmont High School, have two children – daughter Cassie and son Kyle. Cassie is an assistant women’s volleyball coach at Sierra College while Kyle played basketball at Humboldt State.
