VIOLETT AND BROOKINS EACH MEET NCAA PROVISIONAL MARK IN RECORD-BREAKING WEEKEND

2/7/2009

NAMPA, Idaho — In what is beginning to sound repetitive, Ericka Violett and Ronald Brookins, once again, stole the show for the Sacramento State track team on Saturday in the fnial day of the United Heritage Classic hosted by Boise State.

Violett capped off the two-day meet by meeting the NCAA provisional mark in the pole vault after clearing 12-11.50. Her mark also set the school record and is tied for the best in the Big Sky Conference this season. The performance was just the latest in an incredible weekend for the Shingle Springs, Calif., native. Violett also recorded the fastest time in the Big Sky this season in the 60-hurdles (8.70) and the best mark in the triple jump (39-07.75). She also met the conference standard in the long jump (19-02.00) and moved into the top five in school history for each event.

Not to be outdone, Brookins also dominated at the meet. The sophomore long jumped 24-11.75 on Friday to surpass the NCAA provisional mark. Due to a clerical error, Brookins was originally credited with a leap that was six inches shorter but had his distance revised on Saturday. His new distance is ninth in Div. I this season and is the second-best in school history, trailing only Raphael McFarlane’s leap of 25-07.75 which came last season. Brookins also improved his standing in the conference and now leads the competition by 1-foot, 6.25 inches. He also bettered his already conference leading and school record time in the 60-hurdles by running 8.00 seconds and met the conference standard in the 60 (7.00).

The pair was part of a Hornet attack which recorded 20 Big Sky qualifying marks and 13 school top-five marks. Other notable performances included sophomore Renisha Robinson winning the 800 in 2:10.82. Robinson’s time is the best in the Big Sky this season and was just off her school-record time of 2:10.26 from last season. She was followed by Lea Wallace who also qualified for the Big Sky championships in the 800 after running 2:13.07 and now ranks fourth in school history.

Sophomore Victoria Humphrey moved into third place in the Hornet record book with a 200 time of 25.17 on Friday. She also ran the 60 in 7.88 seconds. Sophomore Ify Agwuenu also moved up to third in school history with a shot put of 45-06.50. Sophomore Kaitlynne Moore is now second with a pole vault of 12-05.50.

For the men, junior David Rabinowitz ran a career best 1:53.46 in the 800 which qualified for the Big Sky meet and ranks third in school history. Freshman Philip Burks is now fourth at Sacramento State with a triple jump of 47-05.75. Freshmen Marcus McMillan and Taylor Weldon each moved into fifth place all-time for the Hornets. McMillan ran the 60-hurdles in 8.43 seconds and Weldon had a shot put of 48-10.00.

Sacramento State continues its indoor season on Feb. 14 at the Husky Classic in Seattle. The meet will be the final chance for the team to add qualifiers for Big Sky Championships which will take place  Feb. 27-28 in Flagstaff, Ariz.
