SACRAMENTO STATE MEN, IDAHO STATE WOMEN IN FIRST WITH ONE DAY REMAINING

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Behind victories in the pole vault, long jump and high jump the Sacramento State men moved into first place following day three of the 2008 Big Sky Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The Hornets have a total of 61 points and lead Montana State by 2.5 points. Northern Arizona is third with 47.

While Sacramento State surged to its lead on Friday, the Idaho State women utilized its large advantage after the heptathlon to maintain the women’s lead. The Bengals, who scored 26 points on Thursday, concluded day three with 45 points and sit eight points ahead of Eastern Washington and nine above Weber State and Northern Arizona.

For the Hornets, senior Daniel Imlach
won the pole vault for the second straight year with a school record vault of 17-06.50. Imlach broke his own school record of 17-01.00 and also achieved the NCAA regional standard in the process.

In the long jump, freshman Ronald Brookins and junior David Houghton finished first and second, respectively to give the team 18 points. After fouling on his first two attempts, Brookins recorded a mark of 23-09.50 which held up through the remainder of the competition. Houghton, who finished fifth at last season’s meet, jumped 23-07.25 on his second attempt.

Sophomore Emilio Hernandez added the third victory with a career best high jump of 6-10.75.

Other winners on the men’s side included Weber State’s Seth Pilkington who ran 30:19.33 to win the 10K, Northern Arizona’s Ben Ashkettle who won the steeplechase in 9:05.70, Eastern Washington’s Aaron Mettler in the javelin (205-06) and NAU’s Javier Villarreal in the shot put (58-11.50).

The women featured just two event finals on the track where Weber State’s Sariah Long won the steeplechase in 10:25.14 and fellow Wildcat Morgan Haws finished first in the 10K in 36:30.58. In the field events, Idaho State’s Erin Bell captured the long jump (19-04.75), EWU’s Bonnie Millard won the discus (152-09) and teammate Erika Kirley-Price won the hammer (179-01)

The meet concluded on Saturday with the first field event at 10 a.m. The first track event is the men’s 4x100 relay at 12:15 p.m.
