SEARCY MEETS TWO REGIONAL QUALIFYING MARKS; JOHNSON SHATTERS SCHOOL RECORD AT HORNET INVITATIONAL

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Sacramento State athletes met the regional qualifying standard eight times at the Hornet Invitational on Saturday at Hornet Stadium. The group was led by senior Nancy Searcy who qualified in both the 100-hurdles and long jump.
Searcy ran 13.91 in the 100-hurdles to finish second in the event. Her time was the fastest by a collegiate athlete in the meet and trailed only Hornet assistant Tamera Thomas. Searcy also won the long jump with a mark of 19-09.00. She also finished first in the 100-meter dash in a time of 12.03.
Junior Ashley Ast joined Searcy as a qualifier on the women’s side. Ast threw 151-04 to finish second in the javelin. That throw not only ranks second in school history, but also bettered her career best for the second straight week.
The men had five qualifiers. Junior Jody Johnson ran a blistering 20.64 in the 200 to win the event. Johnson’s time shattered the school record of 20.94 which had stood since 1988. Johnson also won the 100 in 10.60 seconds. Senior Chauncey Corbin also qualified in the 200 in a time of 21.06.
In the field events, Daniel Imlach, Raphael McFarlane and Chris Kirkwood each met the standard. Imlach won the pole vault after clearing 16-06.75. McFarlane was first in the long jump with a mark of 24-09.25, which ranks fourth in school history. Kirkwood completed the trio with a javelin throw of 205-09 to place second overall.
Other notables in the meet include freshman Ericka Violett who moved into fourth place in school history with a pole vault of 11-11.75. Junior Lori Vaught won the triple jump and is now fourth in Hornet record book with a leap of 40-04.00.
In addition to the eight regional qualifying marks, Sacramento State also 26 Big Sky Conference qualifying marks.
The team will be back in action next week at the Cal-Nevada Championships hosted by Fresno State on Mar. 30-31.
