Bio: Jeff Magley, hired in December of 2005, enters his fourth season at Sacramento State. He is responsible for guiding the Hornet throwers.

In his three seasons, Magley’s throwers have earned one NCAA All-America accolade, provided the first Sacramento State NCAA Indoor Championship competitor, sent nine to compete at the NCAA West Regional meet, won two Big Sky Conference titles, earned 12 all-conference honors, have established 12 school records, set three conference all-time and championship meet records, and produced 22 all-time top five marks.

Last year, Magley coached three Sacramento State throwers to all-conference honors. Monica Gomez earned the honor indoors in the shot put. Outdoors, Ify Agwuenu and Ashley Ast were recognized in the shot put and javelin, respectively. During the year, Gomez set the school indoor record in the shot put with a mark of 47-05.75, Agwuenu broke the outdoor shot put record with a put of 47-07.75 and Ast bettered her own javelin mark with a throw of 158-10. Agwuenu and Ast each also qualified for the NCAA West Regional.

In 2007, Hornet throwers had an excellent year, highlighted by David Nichols’ Big Sky indoor conference championship in the shot put with a throw 62-2. His mark established new school, conference meet and all-time conference records. The put also sent him to his first appearance at the NCAA Championships where he finished 10th. In doing so, he became the first Hornet to compete at the NCAA Indoor Championship meet. The outdoor season provided four all-conference finishes, two school records and qualified three to compete at the NCAA West Regional. That list included Nichols, who placed third at the regional and qualified for his third outdoor NCAA National Championship meet.

Magley’s first year with the program was memorable in 2006. Hornet throwers broke five school records, won one conference championship, earned four all-conference honors and qualified four to the NCAA West Regional. He guided Nichols to a sixth-place finish at the NCAA Championships. In doing so, he became the first Sacramento State two-time All-American and broke his own school record by two feet. Nichols also qualified for and competed at the USATF National championship where he finished 14th against the nation’s best throwers.

Magley came to Sacramento State after six seasons at Slippery Rock. During his time at Slippery Rock, Magley tutored the throwers and multi-event athletes to 10 NCAA national championship appearances and seven NCAA provisional qualifying performances. He also saw them accumulate 10 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference individual titles and 60 All-Conference honors. Magley’s athletes also broke three PSAC conference records and three school records.

In his final season at Slippery Rock, Magley’s student-athletes won one conference title, earned four all-conference honors. Conference champion in the decathlon Bill Jordan also placed 13th at the NCAA Div. II National Championship meet.

In 2003, Magley coached Mackenzie Gurak to an indoor conference shot put title and PSAC championship meet record. She also won the outdoor shot put title and participated in the NCAA Div. II National Championship in both the shot put and discus where she finished in the top 20 in both.

In 2002, the Rock throwers dominated the PSAC winning one discus and all four shot put titles. Two conference championship meet records were established. Magley guided Cory Darr to two of those championships as well as a ninth and All-American sixth place finish at that year’s NCAA Div. II championship meets.

Magley’s first year at the Rock in 2001 saw four of his student-athletes compete at the NCAA Div. II Championships with finishes of ninth, two 10th places and one 11th. Erica Timmons won both the outdoor PSAC conference titles in the shot put and discus while teammate Mackenzie Gurcak added a second place finish in the discus to complete a one-two sweep of the event.

Prior to his arrival at Slippery Rock, Magley spent one year as an assistant coach at the University of Northern Colorado. During the 2000 season, Magley coached Drew Loftin to a berth at the Outdoor NCAA Championships as well as the North Central Conference title in the hammer and the school record. Angie Leachman also set the school record in the hammer and was a NCAA provisional qualifier.

As an athlete, Magley competed for three years at Westmont College serving as team captain his senior season. Magley received his bachelor’s degree in kinesiology from Westmont in 1998 and earned his master’s in physical education from Northern Colorado in 2000. Magley holds his Level II certification from the USATF in the throws and his Silver Level certification from the U.S. Pole Vault Committee. Coach Magley has also been a speaker at numerous throws clinics throughout the country.

He and his wife, Lisa, are the proud parents of three daughters — Ashley (5), Kelsey (2) and Brynley (born November 2008).
