SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Shilah Bedingfield capped an eventful three days at the NCAA West Preliminary by earning a trip to the NCAA Div. I Outdoor Championships on Saturday night at Hornet Stadium.
Bedingfield ran a school record 22.95 seconds to record the eighth best time in the quarterfinal. Her time breaks her own school record of 23.16 which was set earlier in the year. The sophomore ran in the final heat on Saturday which allowed her to know the time needed to advance to the finals.
"I tried not to listen (to the times) because I didn't want to think too much about it, but I did hear it," Bedingfield said. "I told myself that if I do what I do I should make it but I knew that all those girls are fast."
Bedingfield fired out of the blocks and was able to make up the stagger from her lane six position within the first 50 meters. She sat in third for the middle of the race and crossed in fifth place in the third heat but earned one of the final three bids based on time.
"Normally my start is not where it's at. It's usually off the curve where I kick it in but this past week or two we've been working on getting out and being aggressive. I knew that if I wasn't aggressive I wasn't going to make it."
The NCAA Outdoor Championships will feature the top 24 student-athletes in each event and will be held June 5-8.
Brittany Patterson was the first Hornet to compete on Saturday and finished 34th in the women's triple jump. The sophomore fouled on her first attempt but then recorded a jump of 40-02.00 on her second try. The Phoenix native ended with a foul on her third jump.
Jelaia Jones, who was seeded 48th in the shot put entering the meet, finished 36th with a long of 49-02.50. The senior opened with a put of 49-00.25 before recording a distance of 46-10.75. Her best mark came on her final attempt of her career.
