SACRAMENTO, Calif. — For the second consecutive day, Shilah Bedingfield advanced to the quarterfinal of a sprint to lead Sacramento State at the NCAA West Preliminary at Hornet Stadium. In all, the Hornets participated in three events during the second day of action with Bedingfield competing in the women's 100 and 200 and Kyle Peterson in the men's discus.
Peterson placed 28th in the men's discus. He started with a throw of 149-07 on his first attempt before making a significant jump to 175-02 on his second throw. That distance was his second longest of the season and moved him into fourth place in the flight. The senior's final throw was 168-00 and he finished with the fifth longest throw among the 16 in the flight.
Bedingfield's quest to advance to Austin, Texas for the Outdoor Championships in the 100 came to a close after she ran 11.65 to place 22nd. Bedingfield, who set a PR in 11.46 during the first round on Thursday, was seventh in her heat.
Bedingfield came back 90 minutes later for the first round of the 200. The sophomore advanced to the quarterfinal after placing second in the sixth heat to earn one of three automatic qualifying spots. Her time of 23.17 left her just a hundredth of a second off Texas' Teahna Daniels who won the heat. The Palmdale, Calif., native was also just a fraction of a second off her school record of 23.16. Bedingfield will enter the quarterfinal seeded 10th and will be chasing a berth to nationals on Saturday.
Sacramento State will close the competition on Saturday with Jelaia Jones in the women's shot put, Brittany Patterson in the women's triple jump and Bedingfield in the 200.
