SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Shilah Bedingfield advanced to the quarterfinal of the women's 100 to highlight performances by the Sacramento State track and field team on Thursday at the NCAA West Preliminary on Thursday at Hornet Stadium.
Bedingifeld ran 11.46 in the first round which placed her fourth in her heat. However, her time was the fastest among non-automatic qualifiers and was the 12th best of the day. The sophomore blew away her previous best of 11.83 from earlier this season and moved into second place in school history. The mark left her just shy of Donna Carley's school record of 11.45 which was set in 1983.
Bedingfield will run the quarterfinal on Saturday with the opportunity to advance to the NCAA Championships. The top three finishers in each of the three heats as well as the next three best times will all earn a bid to the meet in Austin, Texas. She will also compete in the first round of the 200 on Saturday night.
Sacramento State began the day in the women's high jump where Shelby Dozier tied for 30th and Jade Cany tied for 36th. Dozier cleared 5-07.00 while Cany was successful at 5-07.00.
Cassidy Zurn narrowly missed qualifying for the quarterfinal in the women's 400-hurdles. The senior ran 1:00.37 in the fourth heat which left her .21 seconds off the final automatic qualifying time. Amy Quinones rounded out the track competitors for the team on the opening day by running 4:33.17 in the 1500 to place 45th.
Brittany Patterson finished 26th in the long jump which was the first of her two events this weekend. Patterson fouled on her first two attempts before a leap of 19-05.25.
The meet gets underway on Friday at noon with the women's discus and men's javelin. The first track event will be the women's 100-hurdles at 4:30 p.m. The final event of the night will be the men's steeplechase at 9 p.m.
