TRACK & FIELD COMPETES IN THE 14TH CAUSEWAY CLASSIC ON FRIDAY IN DAVIS

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Big Sky Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships are two weeks away but championship season begins on Friday for Sacramento State as the team takes part in the Causeway Classic Dual Meet at UC Davis. Field events will start at 2 p.m. and track events will get under way at 3:45 with the men's 4x100 at Toomey Field.

The meet will be scored with points being awarded on a 5-3-2-1 basis for individual events and 5-3 in relays. No team can have more than two scorers in an individual competition.

The Sacramento State men have  gone 9-3-1 against the Aggies since the Dual Meet returned in 2005. The women's competition is tied a 6-6-1after the Hornets cruised to a 113-75 win last season.

The women's sprints will feature two of the best in the Big Sky and Big West Conferences in Shilah Bedingfield and Kirsten Carter. Bedingfield leads the Big Sky in the 100 (11.58), 200 (23.12) and 400 (53.69). Carter has run 1.94 in the 100 to rank fourth in the Big West and is second in the 200 (23.73) and 400 (54.65). Both teams also have a second runner who has run sub 12 seconds in the 100 in Sacramento State's Brittany Patterson (11.76) and UC Davis' Natsumi McGee (11.88).

The Hornets could make their move in the 100-hurdles where the team boasts three of the top five in the Big Sky. The trio is led by Emilia Del Hoyo who has run 14.15. She is followed by Artearra Coffey (14.23) and Cassidy Zurn (14.28). Zurn is also second in the league in the 400-hurdles, having run 59.52.

In the field events, Sacramento State will rely on Brittany Patterson who lead's the conference in the triple jump (41-06.50) and is third in the long jump. Jelaia Jones also boasts a Big Sky-leading shot put of 49-11.25 and is fifth in the hammer (172-07). UC Davis will be led by Erinn Beattie who ranks second nationally in the high jump after clearing 6-00.75 last weekend at the Bryan Clay Invitational.

Kyle Peterson owns the highest rank in the Big Sky for the men. Peterson is second in the discus (178-05) and third in the hammer (196-03). Ryan Tennant is third in the triple jump (48-11) and Jevin Kitchen is third in the high jump (6-08).

The Aggie men are paced by Jered Espanola who has cleared a Big West leading 16-10.00 in the pole vault. Teammate Drake Foote is third at 15-11.25 and ranks second in the high jump at 6-10.75. Senior Drew Xandrine-Anderson remains one of the top triple jumpers in the Big West with a best of 50-07.50.

The meet is the last regular season contest for Sacramento State before the team heads to the Big Sky Championships in Missoula, Mont., on May 8-11.
