MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TRACK & FIELD TAKE TEAM TITLES AT MONDO TEAM CHALLENGE

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Sacramento State men's and women's track and field teams each recorded victories at the Mondo Team Challenge on Saturday at Hornet Stadium. The women had little trouble winning the three-team meet as they totaled 157 and were followed by Idaho (95) and UC Riverside (48). The men prevailed by one point, edging Idaho (114-113). UCR was third with 73.

The Hornet women combined to win 12 events, 29 top three finishes and set five school top 10 marks on Saturday. The men had six first-place finishes and 17 entries finish among the top three.

The meet was the final home regular season contest for the Hornets. Following the competition, the team honored its 15 seniors comprised of Emma Armstrong, Tia Cooke, Emilia Del Hoyo, Julia Grimm, Adrienne Jackson, Amari Jones, Jelaia Jones, Amelia Pear, Kyle Peterson, Sydney Pink, Amy Quinones, Denise Reis, Andrew Stich, Frederick Wagner V and Cassidy Zurn.

Sacramento State will next send its heptathletes and decathletes to the Jim Click Combined Events meet in Tucson, Ariz., next weekend. The next full team meet will come on April 13 at the Woody Wilson Classic in Davis, Calif.

WOMEN'S TRACK HIGHLIGHTS

Shilah Bedingfield finished first in the 100 and 200. Bedingfield ran a wind-aided 11.58 to lead a sweep of the top three spots in the 100 for Sacramento State. She returned to recorded a wind-aided time of 24.04 in the 200.

Mikayla Revera finished first in the 400 in 55.60 to set her career best by .09 seconds.

Sacramento State had the top three finishers in the 100-hurdles which had the advantage of a wind of 2.4 meters per second. Artearra Coffey ran 14.23 and was followed by Cassidy Zurn (14.37) and Chloe Lindbo (15.09).

Zurn returned to win the 400-hurdles in 1:00.89 and Coffey was third (1:05.59). Zurn has finished first in all three of her 400H races this season.

Sacramento State also had a pair of wins in the relays. The 4x100 team ran 46.39 while the 4x400 squad finished in 3:50.80.

On Thursday, the Hornets were represented by a pair of runners at the Mike Fanelli Track Classic. Amelia Pear ran 37:31.99 in the 10K to move into ninth place in school history.

MEN'S TRACK HIGHLIGHTS

Sacramento State captured the first event on the track during the meet by winning the 4x100. The team of Ryan Tennant, Calvin Spellman, Clinton Spellman and Daron Bland ran 41.74 to finish a quarter of second ahead of UC Riverside.

Clinton Spellman added a win in the 100 in his first race in the event this season. Spellman recorded a time of 10.99 which is the second best by a Hornet this year.

Jose Rodriguez finished second in the 200 and had the fastest time this year on the team in the event in 22.04.

WOMEN'S FIELD HIGHLIGHTS

Jelaia Jones capped her Hornet home career by winning the shot put with a career-best performance. Jones finished with a long of 49-11.25 which moved her to third place on the all-time list at Sacramento State.

Shantel Nnaji continued her climb up the Hornet record list with a discus throw of 162-09  to win the event. Her throw improved her third-place standing in the school record book and bettered her PR by 13 inches.

Brittany Patterson won the triple jump with a career best of 41-06.50. The wind-legal jump came on her third attempt and she passed on her final three tries. Patterson's jump was a 13 inch improvement over her PR and was the best by a Sacramento State athlete since 2012.

Shelby Dozier cleared 5-08.00 to win the high jump and move into a tie for sixth place on the school all-time list.

Rhaven Dean completed the list of event winners by finishing first in the hammer. Dean set a career best with a throw of 167-09 and was followed in the top three by Morgan Jones (161-10) and Jelaia Jones (161-08).

MEN'S FIELD HIGHLIGHTS

Quan Phun entered the meet knowing as the only competitor he just had to clear a bar to win the men's pole vault. Phun, however, set a career best by clearing 14-08.00 to earn the first event win of the meet.

Jevin Kitchen matched his career best and won the high jump. Kitchen cleared 6-08.00 to tie his mark set last week at the UC Riverside Spring Classic.

Ryan Tennant was victorious in the men's triple jump. The freshman had a wind-aided best of 47-09.75 on his first attempt and won the competition by 2.75 inches.

Kyle Peterson completed the list of event winners for the men with a hammer throw of 183-04. He also added second place showings in the shot put (51-08.50) and discus (155-10).
