WOMEN'S TRACK & FIELD WINS, MEN SECOND AT UC RIVERSIDE SPRING CLASSIC

RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Led by 16 top five finishes, the Sacramento State women's track and field team claimed the team title at the UC Riverside Spring Classic Invitational. The Hornets totaled 156 points over the two day meet to finish just ahead of UNLV (143.5) and Utah Valley (117.5). The Sacramento State men were second with 124 points. Utah Valley easily finished first in the team competition with 209 points while host UCR was third at 92.

The Hornet men and women combined to win six individual events on Saturday. Three women also posted top 10 marks in school history.

Sacramento State returns home to host the Mondo Team Challenge next Saturday, March 30, at Hornet Stadium.

WOMEN'S TRACK HIGHLIGHTS

Shilah Bedingfield finished first in the 200 and 400. Bedingfield ran 24.05 into a slight headwind to win the 200. She had a time of 54.39 in the 400. Sacramento State also had two others crack the top 10 in the 200. Mikayla Revera was fifth in 24.90 and A'Miracle Barlett was eighth in 25.38. to set a PR.

A week after moving into fifth place and winning the 800 at the Hornet Invitational, Amy Quinones jumped into seventh place in the 1500. The senior ran 4:26.80 to place second on Saturday. Her time destroyed her previous best of 4:30.92.

Cassidy Zurn posted her second straight PR in the 400-hurdles. Zurn broke the one minute mark for the first time last weekend, and win the UCR Spring Classic in 59.52 on Saturday. Her time moved her up one spot to fifth place in school history. Artearra Coffey was fourth in the event in 1:04.60.

Brittany Patterson was second in the 100 in a season best time of 11.95. Patterson was just off the pace of UC Irvine's Hope Bushnell who finished first in 11.93.

Sacramento State had three women finish among the top seven in the 100-hurdles. Artearra Coffey was third in 14.46, Zurn ran a career best 14.55 to  place fourth and Chloe Lindbo also had a PR of 14.94 to finish seventh.

The 4x100 and 4x400 relays also finished among the top three. The 4x100 team ran 46.40 to place second and the 4x400 team crossed in 3:50.02 to finish third.

MEN'S TRACK HIGHLIGHTS

The men matched the women in both relays. The 4x100 team was second in 42.17 while the 4x400 squad placed third in 3:17.86.

Elijah Changco was fourth in the 1500 in a season best 3:57.81. Abraham Maldondo was sixth in 3:59.88.

Daron Bland finished fourth in the 100 to tie Changco for the highest finish among the Hornet men. Bland ran 11.04.

Calvin Spellman led a large group of Sacramento State athletes in the 200 and 400. Spellman set PRs in both events with times of 22.08 in the 200 and 49.03 in the 400.

WOMEN'S FIELD HIGHLIGHTS

Shantel Nnaji surpassed her PR by over 10 feet to place third on Saturday and move into third place in Hornet history in the discus. Nnaji, who had a best of 151-01 coming into the meet, threw 161-08 on her final attempt. That mark is the best by a Hornet women since 2005. She fouled on her first two attempts before a throw of 149-03 on her third attempt. A throw of 145-06 and another foul came before her career best.

Rhaven Dean earned her first collegiate win by throwing the javelin 130-05. Dean took the lead on her second attempt with a throw of 128-09. That mark held until her final throw which extended her margin of victory. Dean now leads the Big Sky by six feet.

Jade Cany tied for the top height in the high jump but finished in second place based on jumps. Cany set a career best by clearing 5-06.00.

Jelaia Jones was third in the shot put (48-11.75) and sixth in the discus (137-08). The Hornets also had four others in the top eight of the shot put led by Morgan Jones who was fourth (44-08.00).

MEN'S FIELD HIGHLIGHTS

Kyle Peterson finished in first place in the discus. Peterson was nearly 10 feet beyond his season best with a throw of 178-05. The senior opened the competition with a distance of 160-02 and held the lead following each round. He had an improvement to 167-06 before his best throw on his third try. That mark left him just shy of his career best of 180-00 which came last season at the NCAA West Preliminary. The throw is also the best in the Big Sky this season.

Jevin Kitchen cleared a career best 6-08.00 to win the high jump. The sophomore also took the lead in the Big Sky this season.

Ryan Tennant and Daron Bland posted the top two long jumps in the Big Sky this season. Tennant was second on Saturday with a long of 23-08.25 on his fifth attempt. Bland jumped 23-00.75 on his fifth try and placed sixth.

The Hornet men also had third-place finishes from Andrew Stich in the javelin and Quan Phun in the pole vault. Stich threw 179-02 in his first outdoor competition of the year. Phun cleared 14-07.25 to set a career best in the pole vault.
