SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Sacramento State's Darius Armstead will compete in the men's triple jump at the NCAA Div. I Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Friday at historic Hayward Field in Oregon. Armstead will jump fifth in the first flight which starts a 5:45 p.m.
The senior will be making his first appearance at the NCAA Championships. Armstead most recently finished fourth at the NCAA West Preliminary at Hornet Stadium on May 26. He is one of 24 student-athletes (12 from East and West Preliminaries) to qualify for the meet. The top eight finishers will earn first team All-America honors, the next eight (9-16) will be named to the second team while the final eight (17-24) will be honorable mention. All 24 athletes will have three jumps in their initial flight. The top nine will then move on to the finals where they will have three more attempts.
Armstead ranks 16th among the 24 student-athletes in the field this season. He set his season best at the NCAA West Preliminary with a jump of 52-05.50 on his second of three attempts. His career best of 53-01.50 came last season at the Causeway Classic and set the Sacramento State school record.
Since 1997, the Hornets have now had 23 entries at the Div. I Outdoor Championships, however, the Visalia, Calif., native is the first in the triple jump. Last season, Cory Barger competed in the men's long jump and finished 17th. Jesse Elvrom (javelin, 2013) and David Nichols (shot put, 2006) have the highest finishes by a Sacramento State male at the meet. Marisa Avendano was second in the women's 10K in 1997 for the best overall finish.
Live coverage of the meet will be shown on ESPN beginning at 5:30 p.m. PT. There will also be a dedicated feed of the triple jump finals on ESPN3
