NCAA West Preliminary Schedule
SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Nine members of the Sacramento State track and field teams will compete in 11 events at the NCAA West Preliminary next week at Hornet Stadium. The meet, which will take place May 24-26, serves as the first and second rounds of the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Each individual event will have 48 competitors, relays will have 24 teams, with the top 12 advancing to the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore.
Freshman Shilah Bedingfield and sophomore Jah Strange each qualified in a pair of events. Bedingfield earned a spot in the 200 where she is ranked 44th with a best of 23.76 this season. She also claimed the final entry in the 400 after running 54.24 at the Causeway Classic. Strange is making his second consecutive appearance at the NCAA West Preliminary. He qualified in the triple jump as a freshman and heads into next week seeded 31st in the region with a best of 51-03.75. Strange also advanced in the long jump where he's ranked 31st following his leap of 24-03.75 at last week's Big Sky Championships.
The highest ranked Hornet in any event is Darius Armstead who has a triple jump of 52-04.75 which places him 11th in the region. Armstead is returned to the NCAA West Preliminary in the event and will be joined by Strange as well as senior Mohamed Abdullah (47th, 49-11.25). Sacramento State's three entries in the triple jump are the most for the team in any event.
Andre Lindsey, Cory Barger and Kyle Peterson complete the entries for the men's team. Lindsey has run 14.09 this season in the 110-hurdles and is seeded 29th. He competed at the meet a year ago in Texas and advanced to the second round. Barger is 46th in the region in the long jump with a wind-aided best of 24-08.25 at the Big Sky Championships. Last season Barger was in a similar position as he claimed one of the final entries to the preliminary and advanced all the way to the NCAA Championships where he earned All-America honors. Peterson is the team's lone thrower in the competition. The junior will take part in the discus which will be thrown inside Hornet Stadium on Saturday. Peterson led the Big Sky for most of the year with a long of 180-00.
Carly Schulz and Emilia Del Hoyo round out the women's lineup for Sacramento State. Schulz ran 58.76 in the 400-hurdles at the Mt. SAC Relays and is currently seeded 29th in the region. Del Hoyo, who was the Big Sky champion in the triple jump and placed second in the heptathlon, captured the final entry in the triple jump. Her mark of 41-02.50 at the championships was her career best.
