MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TRACK & FIELD FINISH SECOND AT SACRAMENTO STATE OPEN

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Sacramento State track and field team concluded its 2018 regular season with the Sacramento State Open on Saturday at Hornet Stadium. With both teams resting athletes heading into next week's Big Sky Outdoor Championships, the Sacramento State men and women both finished in second place in the team standings. BYU took first in the women's competition with 182 points while the Hornets had 156. The Cougar men scored 180 to edge Sacramento State (157).

Near the conclusion of the meet, the program honored 17 seniors who were competing at Hornet Stadium for the final time in a regular season meet. The team will next travel to Moscow, Idaho for the Big Sky Outdoor Championships starting on Tuesday with the heptathlon and decathlon. The main program of the meet gets under way on Thursday. Several Hornets will have the opportunity to compete one final time at Hornet Stadium this year as the venue will serve as the host for the NCAA West Preliminary on May 24-26.

WOMEN'S TRACK HIGHLIGHTS

Senior Gracie Albano continued her climb up the Sacramento State record board in the steeplechase. Albano ran a career best 10:50.86 and now ranks third in school history. Her time also placed her second in the meet.

Freshman Cagnei Duncan led a trio of Hornets who set season bests in the 1500. Duncan finished first overall in a time 4:38.15. She was followed by Amelia Pear and Rachel Victor who also set season bests in the event. Pear ran 4:48.90 while Victor had a time of 4:50.19.

MEN'S TRACK HIGHLIGHTS

Senior Andre Lindsey had the highest finish among collegiate athletes in the 110-hurdles. Lindsey ran 14.36 to place third overall behind former UCLA star Misana VIltz and Dominck Eastman of AUC Elite. Lindsey, who's the defending Big Sky outdoor champion, remains ranked second in the league this season and owns the fastest non-altitude adjusted mark.

Elijah Changco started the day with a big PR in the 1500. Changco ran 3:51.84 which was 2.6 seconds ahead of his previous best.

Freshman Jose Rodriguez sets PRs in the 200 (22.40) and 400 (50.34). Fellow freshman Clinton Spellman finished fourth in the 400 with a career best time of 49.56.

Other season bests for the men included Tristen Thomson in the 800 (1:55.52) and Demetrius Douglas in the 400-hurdles (56.81).

WOMEN'S FIELD HIGHLIGHTS

Julia Grimm set a career best and finished first in the javelin with a throw of 147-01. Grimm bettered her personal best by a foot and now ranks fourth in the Big Sky this season.

Freshman Brittany Patterson, who is the only Big Sky female to triple jump 40 feet this season, reached the mark again and finished first in the event. Patterson jumped 40-00.00 and took second in the long jump with a best of 18-08.50. Nashedah Mu'Min finished second in the triple jump behind Patterson after a leap of 38-11.75. Sacramento State will head into the Big Sky Championships with the top three marks in the Big Sky this season in the triple jump.

Other personal bests in the field events came from Sareena Patzke (HJ - 5-04.25) and Rhaven Dean (HAM - 150-08).

MEN'S FIELD HIGHLIGHTS

A week after setting his career best and taking over the Big Sky lead in the discus with a throw of 180-00, Kyle Peterson added another win in the event. The junior threw 175-09 and was more that eight feet beyond the closest competitor.

Cory Barger set his season best in the long jump and finished second overall at 24-05.75. Barger, who earned All-America honors a year ago, moved into third place in the Big Sky this season.

Senior Max Jette set a season best in the high jump after clearing 6-04.00 Jette's mark tied him with freshman Jevin Kitchen for the top height on the team at the meet. Jette will look to defend his Big Sky decathlon title next week.
