WOMEN ROLL TO CAUSEWAY TITLE; MEN FALL BY THREE POINTS

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Sacramento State women won 13 of the 18 events and easily rolled to a victory over UC Davis in the annual Causeway Classic Dual Meet on Friday night at Hornet Stadium. The Hornets totaled 113 points compared to 75 from the Aggies. The men's competition was much closer as UC Davis held on for a 96-93 win.

The victory was the first for the women in the series since 2012 and drew the all-time series even at 6-6-1. The narrow loss was a rarity for the Hornet men as they still hold an 8-3-1 edge over the last 12 years.

Sacramento State will remain home for its final regular season meet of the year next Saturday, May 5, at the Sacramento State Open. The team will then compete at the Big Sky Championships in Moscow, Idaho, the following week.

Women's Track Highlights

Freshman Shilah Bedingfield finished first in the 200 and 400 and continued her impressive first season with the Hornets. Bedingfield ran 54.24 to blow away the field in the 400. Her time moved her into third place in school history and was the second fastest by a Hornet woman since 1983. Bedingfield added a win in the 200 in 24.27.

Amy Quinones also recorded a pair of event wins on the track. Quinones ran 2:11.82 in the 800 and was one of three Hornets in the top four. She was followed in the event by Denise Reis (2:14.72) and Sara Stevens (2:17.67, fourth). Quinones completed the double by running 4:34.66 in the 1500. Cagnei Duncan was second in the race in 4:39.61.

Seniors Gracie Albano and Carly Schulz completed the team's march through the running events. Albano pulled away over the final lap to win the 3K in 10:00.97. Schulz led a 1-2 finish in the 400-hurdles where she was followed by Cassidy Zurn. Schulz ran 59.45 with Zurn crossing in 1:01.35.

Sacramento State also swept the relays starting the meet with a time of 45.96 in the 4x100 and putting the competition away by running 3:45.83 in the 4x400.

Women's Field Highlights

Jelaia Jones used a career best to finish first in the shot put. The senior had a put of 48-11.75 to place her well over four feet beyond the closest competitor. Her mark is also the fourth best in school history. Jones was also second in the discus.

Danielle Brandon finished first in the pole vault and was one of three Sacramento State athletes in the top four. Brandon and Tessa Davis each cleared 11-10.00 but the senior took first place based on jumps.

Sacramento State dominated the triple jump with four of the top five marks. Nirie Boglino won the event with a best of 38-06.25 and finished a quarter-inch beyond teammate Emilia Del Hoyo. Nashedah Mu'Min placed third at 38-04.75 and Tia Cooke was fifth at 37-03.75.

Kathleen Durand was an inch shy of a 10-foot win in the hammer. The senior threw 174-10 to lead a sweep of the top six spots by Hornets. Morgan Jones was the closest to Durand at 164-11.

The Hornet women also claimed the top three spots in the javelin. Senior Julia Grimm led the way with a best of 134-11. Rhaven Dean ranked second with a best of 133-00 on her first attempt of the meet.

Men's Track Highlights

Andre Lindsey ran a Big Sky Conference-leading time of 14.19 to win the 110-hurdles. The senior's time moves him .19 seconds ahead of any other competitor in the conference.

Sacramento State continued to claw away at its point deficit and was aided by a 1-2-3 finish in the 3K from Tyler Sickler, Elijah Changco and Aidan Schraer. Sickler led for almost the entire race and pulled away from pack to win with a time of 8:31.07. Changco added his second second-place finish of the night after crossing in 8:42.10.

Freshman Clinton Spellman win the 200 in 21.74 and senior Max Jette had the top time in the 400-hurdles in 54.24.

Sacramento State capped the night with a dramatic win the 4x400 relay. Trailing by nearly 200 meters on the final exchange, sophomore Alec Foster erased the gap and took the lead on the final turn. The Hornets finished with a time of 3:13.52 which is the second fastest time in the Big Sky this season and the fastest not at altitude.

Men's Field Highlights

Kyle Peterson was named the male MVP of the meet after winning the shot put, discus and hammer. Peterson threw 180-00 to win the discus and jump into second place in school history. The junior also took over the lead in the Big Sky and is the first person in the league to hit 180-feet this season. The Oakdale, Calif., native also moved into ninth place in school history in the shot put with a best of 54-07.25. He won the hammer at 182-07.

Sacramento State jumpers combined to take the top five positions in the long jump and three of the top five in the triple jump. Sophomore Jah Strange won the long jump with wind-aided mark of 24-11.75. Strange's distance was a foot beyond his previous best and is the best in the Big Sky this season. However, the wind of 3.2 mps excludes him from the school top 10. Strange went on to placed second in the triple jump at 51-03.75 and he also finished second in the 100 (10.79).

Darius Armstead won the triple jump with a season best of 52-04.75. That distance was just off his school record of 53-01.50 and is the best in the Big Sky this year.
