SACRAMENTO, Calf. — For the second time in three weeks, the Sacramento State track & field teams will have the luxury of competing at home as the teams will host the Mondo Team Challenge on Saturday, March 31, at Hornet Stadium. The seven-team meet will begin with women's hammer competition at 9:30 a.m. The first running event will be the 4x100 relay at 1:15 p.m. and the meet is scheduled to conclude with the 4x400 at 4:25 p.m.

Along with Sacramento State, the Mondo Team Challenge will feature North Dakota of the Big Sky Conference, UC Irvine, UC Riverside and Long Beach from the Big West and Southern Illinois from the Missouri Valley Conference in both genders. The Mountain West Conference's UNLV will also compete in the women's races. Southern Illinois' appearance marks the return of former Sacramento State coaches Kathleen Raske and Terry Van Laningham. The pair sparked the revival of the Hornet program leading the team to several conference titles before returning to Raske's alma mater.

Saturday's meet will feature 10 men and 12 women who are ranked among the top 50 in NCAA Div. I this season. Three events on the men's side will include multiple athletes in the top 50. The Sacramento Stat trio of Jah Strange, Darius Armstead and Mohamed Abdullah are all off to fantastic starts in the triple jump. Strange is fifth nationally with a best of 51-03.50. Armstead is sixth in the nation at 50-10.75 and Abdullah ranks 41st at 48-11.00. UC Irvine's Asa Allen and Sacramento State's Andre Lindsey will go head-to-head in the 110-hurdles. Allen has run 14.28 this season while Lindsey has a best of 14.32. Southern Illinois will look to leave its mark in the throws where Jared Kern and Ricky Hurley are both ranked in the top 50 in the shot put. Kern is fourth in Div. I with a long of 64-02.50.

The best battle in the women's competition might come in the first running event of the day. UC Irinve, Long Beach State and UNLV are all ranked among the top 35 in the 4x100. The 49ers lead the trio at 45.15. UCI is one-hundredth of a second behind and UNLV has a best of 45.26. High jumper Bria Palmer of LBSU is the highest ranked woman in the meet. Palmer is 14th after clearing 5-07.75 earlier this season. The women's 800 is slated to include pair of top-50 performers in UCR's Faith Makau (25th, 2:09.99) and Sacramento State's Denise Reis (41st, 2:10.52). LBSU's Courtne Davis is the top sprinter in the field. Davis has run 11.54 in the 100 and 23.31 in the 200 this year. However, she is only entered in the 100 for the meet.

Sacramento State most recently competed at the UC Riverside Spring Classic last weekend. The team earned three Big Sky Conference Athlete of the Week awards as Cassidy Zurn was named the women's track athlete, Andre Lindsey was the men's track athlete and Julia Grimm was the women's field athlete of the week. Along with those three, the team received a strong performance from Jah Strange in triple jump.

The Hornets will have 35 women and 24 men take part in the Mondo Team Challenge on Saturday. Shilah Bedingfield, Emilia Del Hoyo, Brittany Patterson, MIkayla Revera and Carly Schulz are all entered in four events for the women while seven others will compete in three events.
