TRACK & FIELD CLOSES HOME SEASON AT SACRAMENTO STATE OPEN

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Chloe Berlioux recorded the fifth fastest time in Sacramento State history in the 800 and Haley Heinemann and Gracie Albano moved into fourth and seventh in the steeplechase to lead the Hornets' efforts on Saturday at the Sacramento State Open.

The meet served as the final chance for athletes to prepare before the Big Sky Outdoor Championships which will take place next week in Greeley, Colo.

The women's 800 featured six athletes who ran under 2:09. Dominique Jackson and former Sacramento State All-American Lea Wallace finished first and second, respectively, while competing for the SRA Elite club. Jackson ran 2:04.21 with Wallace posting a time of 2:05.07. Berlioux was fifth in the meet at 2:08.74 which was a half-second faster than her previous best.

Heinemann and Albano started the day for the Hornets with career bests in the steeplechase. Heinemann ran 10:58.38 to become the first Sacramento State woman to break 11 minutes since 2013. Her time was over nine seconds quicker than her season low. Albano also set a PR with a time of 11:07.64 which also took nine seconds off her best.

Sacramento State also received event wins from Kristen Robinson in the 100-hurdles and Carly Schulz in the 400-hurdles. Robinson won in 14.23 while Schulz had a PR of 1:02.68.

The Hornet men had four top four finishes at the meet. Senior Osaretin Ogbeide was second in the 400 (49.45). Sophomore Austin Tinsley was third in the 110-hurdles with a career best of 14.59. In the field events, Richard Casas and James Kinloch placed second in the shot put and discus, respectively. Casas had a put of 51-09.75 while Kinloch threw the discus 171-03.

While many of the Sacramento State athletes had the weekend off or competed in fewer events than usual, many former Hornets shined during the meet. Along with the performance of Wallace in the 800, Rachel Mitchell finished first in the 1500 (4:28.70), James January was first in the men's shot (54-0475) and Chris Kirkwood had the best mark in the javelin (214-09). Olympic gold medalist and current Hornet assistant Stephanie Brown Trafton placed first in the discus with a throw 191-09 which bettered the rest of the field by 37-feet, 9-inches.

Sacramento State will close its regular season next week at the Big Sky Championships hosted by Northern Colorado. The heptathlon and decathlon will take place on Wednesday and Thursday and the main program of the meet will be held on Friday and Saturday. Sacramento State won the women's outdoor title a year ago and was co-champion in the men's team competition.
