STRYHAS WINS CONSOLATION FINAL, LOREDO AND VAN DILLEN FALL SHORT IN BULLDOG CLASSIC DOUBLES FINAL
FRESNO, Calif. -- Sacramento State freshman Anton Stryhas was victorious in the Flight A singles consolation final, and the Hornets’ doubles team of junior Hague Van Dillen and senior Gabriel Loredo lost in the Flight B doubles final in the third and final day of the Bulldog Tennis Classic Sunday afternoon at the Wathen Tennis Center. In addition, the Hornets’ doubles team of seniors Warwick Foy and Ramon Perez knocked off UC Davis’ Thomas McGee and Kevin Liang, 8-6, to win the Flight B consolation doubles championship.
After losing his first-round singles match on Friday, Stryhas was placed into the consolation bracket where he ripped off four-consecutive victories, capped by today’s 4-6, 6-3, (10-5 in the super tiebreaker) victory over San Diego’s Jonas Mouly in the consolation championship match. All four of Stryhas’ victories during the tournament came in super tiebreakers after splitting the first two sets.
Van Dillen and Loredo, who were seeded No. 3 at the tournament, had won three-straight doubles matches to advance to this afternoon’s Flight B doubles championship. However, the team’s run came to an end in an 8-6 loss to top-seeded Tejesvi Veerepalli and Charles Irie of Fresno State in the final.
Foy and Perez lost their first-round doubles match to Veerepalli and Irie, before winning each of their consolation matches to win the consolation championship.
A total of seven Sacramento State players competed at the three-day, 10-team tournament, comprised of Loredo, Van Dillen, Stryhas, Perez, Foy, and freshmen Timothy Lantin and Xavier Barajas-Smith.
Both Lantin and Barajas-Smith reached the Flight B singles round of 16 before losing, and Perez lost in the Flight B consolation singles semifinals. Complete results from each of Sacramento State’s singles matches during the tournament are below.
In doubles action, the combination of Barajas-Smith and Stryhas reached the Flight A quarterfinals, defeating USC’s Jarryd Cooper and Jason McNaughton, 8-6, in the round of 16 before falling to San Diego’s No. 3 seed Thomas Liversage and Charl Wolmarans, 8-5.
