SACRAMENTO, Calif. --- Senior Warwick Foy reached the flight B semifinals to lead the Sacramento State contingent at the 2006 Bronco Classic this past weekend. Foy won his first two matches before falling to eventual champion Jay Wong of Santa Clara, 6-0, 6-2.The Wellington, New Zealand, native was scheduled to open the tournament in the round of 64. However, an injury to UC San Diego’s Blake Mesiter advanced Foy to the second round. Once there, he defeated Stanford’s Jeff Zeller, 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (0). The third round saw Foy knock off Geoff Chizever of Cal, 6-3, 6-3. Foy kept his momentum rolling in the quarterfinals with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Fresno Pacific’s Roberto Bianco.
Foy also teamed with Ramon Perez in the flight B doubles. The pair defeated Kian Fattahi and Jared Kamel of UC Santa Cruz, 8-4, in the first round but was defeated by Oregon’s Marcos Verdasco and Stephen Weichert, 8-2.
Freshman Anton Stryhas also competed in flight B. Stryhas beat Max Liberty-Point of UC Santa Cruz, 6-0, 6-3, in the round of 32. He then knocked off Petr Sitnikov of Fresno Pacific, 6-1, 6-4, to join Foy in the quarterfinals. Santa Clara’s Tommy Hicks ended Stryhas’ run with a 6-4, 5-7, 6-3, win.
Sacramento State also had two individuals and two doubles teams in flight A. Senior Gabriel Loredo and freshman Xavier Barajas-Smith were both defeated in the round of 32. Loredo was topped by Jack Hui of UC Santa Barbara, 6-1, 6-4, and Smith fell to Piotr Dilaj of Boise State, 6-2, 6-3. Loredo continued play in the consolation bracket and was defeated by Stanford’s Kevin Kaiser, 6-4, 6-4.
In doubles play, Loredo and junior Hague Van Dillen earned a first round win with an 8-3 victory over Marco Pineda and Zack Radetzky of Gonzaga. Stanford’s Eric McKean and Paul Morrissey defeated the team in the round of 16, 8-3.
Freshman Tim Lantin and Stryhas also went 1-1. The freshmen moved onto the second round after Adam Faurvre and Ozpinar Alp of Saint Mary’s withdrew. Lantin and Stryhas then recorded a hard-fought 9-5 (5) win over Matt Berry and Asaf Cohen of San Francisco. The pair were eventually defeated, 8-6, by Cal’s Chizever and John Petit.
Three Hornets were in action in flight C singles. Perez had the most success, advancing to the quarterfinals. The senior began with a 6-0, 2-6, 6-1, win over Collin Mark-Griffin of UCSC. He then swept UCSD’s Stephen Oechel, 6-4, 6-1 to move to the quarterfinals. Once there, Santa Clara’s Blaine Sheilds recorded a 2-6, 7-6 (5), 6-0 win.
Van Dillen opened play in the round of 64 with a win over Fattahi. In the second round, he defeated Gonzaga’s Charles Adams, 6-0, 6-3, but was defeated in the round of 16 by Eric Pickard of Oregon, 6-3, 6-1.
Lantin fell in the first round, 6-3, 6-2, to Fresno Pacific’s Marco Foeliz. He was also defeated in the consolation round by UCSC’s Julian Sunn, 5-7, 6-4, (10-3).
