DEIONTE GORDON BECOMES THIRD HORNET TO EARN BIG SKY PLAYER OF THE WEEK

9/30/2008

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Sacramento State freshman Deionte Gordon was named the Big Sky Conference’s co-Defensive Player of the Week. The honor is the first for Gordon and he becomes the third Hornet to earn the award this season joining freshman Zack Nash and sophomore Christian Clark.

Gordon helped Sacramento State to a 41-31 win over Portland State on Saturday, tying for the team lead with eight total tackles. His biggest play came in the second quarter when he gathered in a deflected pass and weaved his way into the end zone for a 15-yard touchdown which gave the Hornets a 20-14 lead.

The Seaside, Calif., native leads the team with two interceptions this season and ranks fourth with 29 total tackles. He has also started all five games for the team at cornerback as a true freshman.

Gordon shared the award with Montana State’s Dane Fletcher. Eastern Washington quarterback Matt Nichols was the Offensive Player of the Week and Montana kicker Bobby McKnight earned the special teams honor.

Sacramento State next plays at Northern Arizona on Saturday, Oct. 4, at 3:05 p.m.
