SAN JOSE, Calif. – Sacramento State increased its winning streak to a season high eight-straight games as the Hornets swept a non-conference doubleheader from San Jose State Saturday afternoon at SJSU Field. The Hornets won the first game, 6-1, before taking the nightcap, 2-1, in nine innings.The winning streak is Sacramento State''s longest since the 1995 squad won nine consecutive games. With the two victories, the Hornets are now 11-3 this season, the team''s best start since the 1995 team began the year 13-1. San Jose State dropped to 5-8 with the two losses.
After losing the first two games of the season to 21st-ranked Pacific, Sacramento State has reeled off 11 wins in its last 12 games.
In the first game, Sacramento State took advantage of three San Jose State errors as the Hornets scored four unearned runs. The team also tallied a season high 12 hits as all but one starter had at least one hit. Sacramento State posted single runs in the first, third, sixth and seventh innings, and two runs in the second.
Senior Jillian Bivert led the Hornets offense with three hits while junior Nicole Deatherage and sophomore Erin Coyne collected two hits apiece. Coyne added two RBIs and now leads the team with 13 this season. Deatherage (5-2) got the win for the Hornets, allowing just one hit while striking out seven in six innings. Senior Gina Steenburgen pitched the final inning and allowed an unearned run as Deatherage was pulled in the top of the seventh after fouling a ball off her forehead.
In the second game, sophomore Brianne Ferguson went all nine innings while allowing just one run and eight hits and striking out seven. Ferguson (4-1) has won each of her last four decisions and has allowed just one earned run in her last 34.1 innings of work. She had her streak of consecutive innings without allowing an earned run snapped at 31.1 after allowing a run in the top of the seventh.
The Hornets got on the board first in the top of the seventh on an RBI-single from Stephanie Lockhart which scored Amber Dragomir. San Jose State tied it in the bottom of the seventh on a RBI-single from Elisa Barrios. The Spartans had a chance to win the game later in the inning, but Hornet center fielder Lindy Winkler threw out Megan Delgado at the plate as she tried to score from second base on a Becca Baldridge single. It marked the third time this season Winkler has thrown out a runner at the plate.
The Hornets retook the lead in the top of the ninth after a two-out, RBI-single from Coyne scoring Winkler. San Jose State loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth but Ferguson got Baldridge to foul out to end the game.
Kelli McCollister (1-2) got the loss despite allowing just three hits and two runs (one earned) in nine innings.
Sacramento State returns to action for a pair of home doubleheaders next week. The Hornets host Nevada in a makeup doubleheader on Wednesday, Feb. 26, at 1 p.m. The team then hosts San Jose State on Saturday, March 1, at noon. The games against Nevada will mark the first of the season at newly-renovated Shea Stadium on the Sacramento State campus.
