SOFTBALL SPLITS TWO GAMES IN SECOND ROUND OF CAL POLY TOURNAMENT

2/8/2003

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The Sacramento State softball team split two games in the second day of the Cal Poly Mustang Roundup Saturday afternoon at Bob Janssen Field. The Hornets won their first game of the day against Colorado State (5-1) before losing in nine innings to host Cal Poly, 4-3.

The Hornets, who defeated both San Diego and UC Santa Barbara in the first round of the tournament yesterday, finish up the three-day, five-game round-robin tournament tomorrow (Sunday, Feb. 9) against Nevada at 2 p.m. Sacramento State, which had won three in a row prior to the loss against Cal Poly, is now 3-3 this season and 3-1 in the tournament.

In the first game of the day, Sacramento State scored four runs in the top of the seventh to break a 1-1 tie. The Hornets had five hits in the inning, highlighted by a two-run triple from senior Jillian Bivert. Junior Stephanie Lockhart opened the inning with a triple before Amber Dragomir and Lindy Winkler both had infield hits to load the bases with no outs. Junior Amy Walter then grounded out to shortstop scoring Lockhart from third while Winkler and Dragomir advanced to second and third base, respectively.

Bivert followed with her two-run triple before eventually scoring the Hornets'' final run of the inning on an RBI-single from Erin Coyne. Sacramento State''s Brianne Ferguson (1-1) picked up her first win of the season, allowing seven hits and one unearned run in seven innings of work. Ferguson worked out of trouble for the majority of the afternoon as Colorado State (2-4) left 11 runners on base, including the bases loaded in the fifth inning. Melanie Mahoney picked up the loss for Colorado State after allowing 11 hits and five runs in 6.1 innings.

Sacramento State''s Nos. 1-4 hitters combined to go 8-for-15 with four RBIs and three runs scored. Winkler (2-for-4 with a run), Walter (2-for-3 with a double and an RBI), Bivert (2-for-4 with two runs scored, a triple and two RBIs) and Coyne (2-for-4 with an RBI) accounted for all but three of the Hornets'' hits. Winkler, who is the Hornets'' starting center fielder, also threw out a Colorado State runner trying to score from second base on a single in the third inning. All but two Sacramento State starters had at least one hit in the contest.

In the second game of the day, Roni Sparrey''s one-out, RBI-fielders choice in the bottom of the ninth inning scored Rebecca Ramos with the game-winning run. Sacramento State, which had never trailed in the game until the ninth inning, took a 3-2 lead into the bottom of the seventh. Cal Poly, however, tied the score after a two-out error by sophomore Amy Hillel allowed Ramos to score and send the game into extra innings.

The contest featured a combined six errors (two from the Hornets) as all four Sacramento State runs were unearned. A Cal Poly throwing error allowed both Winkler and Walter to score in the first inning. Cal Poly tied the score with single runs in the fourth and fifth innings on RBI-singles from Erin Myers and Chelsy Stoufer, respectively. The Hornets retook the lead in the sixth inning after a Mustang error allowed Walter to score the go-ahead run.

Sacramento State starter Nicole Deatherage (1-2) went the distance in the loss, giving up four runs (three earned) and eight hits in 8.1 innings. The Hornets had entered the contest with just three errors in five game before committing two against the Mustangs. Cassie Vanderbeek (3-3) got the win in relief for Cal Poly, allowing just one hit in four innings.

For Sacramento State, Winkler has now hit safely in all six games this season and leads the team with a .455 batting average, four multiple-hit games, three stolen bases, a .500 on-base percentage, 12 total bases and a .545 slugging percentage.
