THIRD-RANKED WASHINGTON SLIPS BY SOFTBALL

3/21/2003

SACRAMENTO, CALIF. -- Jaime Clark and Dena Tyson each homered as third-ranked Washington slipped by Sacramento State, 4-3, in the second day of the Capital Classic Softball Tournament Friday afternoon at the Sacramento Softball Complex.

With the victory, Washington improved its record to 27-2-1 and increased its season home run total to 42. The Hornets dropped to 17-10 and are now 1-1 at the tournament, including last night’s victory over Morehead State. Sacramento State will play two games on both Saturday and Sunday to round out the tournament.

Clark’s two-run homer in the fifth inning broke a 2-2 tie and proved to be the game-winning hit as the Hornets closed to within, 4-3, in the sixth, but could get no closer.

Washington opened the scoring in the first on a two-out, RBI-single from Kristen Rivera. The Hornets responded with single runs in the second and third innings on a Washington error allowing pinch runner Kristi Yoshizawa to score and a solo home run by junior Amy Walter, respectively. The homer was Walter’s first of the season.

The Huskies immediately tied it in the top of the fourth on Tyson’s solo shot, and took the lead for good on Clark’s’ blast. The Hornets took advantage of another Washington error to score in the sixth, but stranded Lindy Winkler at second base to close the inning.

Washington’s Tia Bollinger (14-1) picked up the win in relief for the Huskies, allowing two hits and one unearned run in four innings. Sophomore Brianne Ferguson (6-5) got the loss, allowing eight hits and four runs (three earned) in seven innings.

The Hornets are now 1-7 this season against teams that are either ranked in the top 25 or receiving votes for the top 25.

Sacramento State’s schedule for the rest of the tournament is as follows: Saturday vs. Utah (10 a.m.) and Illinois (12:30 p.m.), and Sunday vs. Long Island (9 a.m.) and Utah State (11 a.m.).
