SOFTBALL DROPS TWO TO SEVENTH-RANKED STANFORD

4/24/2002

STANFORD, Calif. – Stanford pitching allowed Sacramento State a combined one run and eight hits over two games as the seventh-ranked Cardinal swept a non-conference softball doubleheader from the Hornets Wednesday evening at Smith Family Stadium. Stanford won the first game, 3-0, before taking the night cap, 7-1.

With the victories, the Cardinal improved to 37-11 overall. Sacramento State, which has now dropped a season-high seven games in a row, fell to 15-27.

In the first game, Stanford scored three runs in the fifth inning and Tori Nyberg allowed four hits in six innings of work as the Cardinal went on to the 3-0 victory. Nyberg (21-6) struck out four and walked only one. Elizabeth Bendig pitched the seventh inning to pick up her second save of the season.

After Hornet pitchers allowed just two hits through the first four innings, Stanford broke out in the fifth behind a sacrifice fly from Leah Nelson and a two-out, two-run single from Sarah Beeson. Five Cardinal players collected one hit as there were no extra base hits by either team during the contest.

Jillian Bivert started the game for the Hornets, allowing two hits in two innings of work. Gina Steenburgen pitched the third inning, allowing a walk, before Kirsten Wise threw a perfect fourth inning. Sophomore Nicole Deatherage entered the game in the fifth inning and allowed the Cardinal their three runs. For the first time this season, Sacramento State head coach Kathy Strahan decided to use all four pitchers and scripted the innings they would pitch. Deatherage (8-7) wound up with the loss, allowing three runs and three hits in two innings.

Offensively, Bivert paced the Hornets with two hits. Sacramento State left eight runners on base in the game, which included stranding runners at second and third base in both the second and third innings.

In the second game, Stanford scored two runs in both the first and third innings, and three more in the fifth to go on to the victory. Robin Walker, Jessica Mendoza and Jessica Allister each had two hits to lead the Cardinal. Mendoza finished with a two-run homer in the first inning and an RBI-double in the third.

Maureen LeCocq (15-5) got the win for Stanford, allowing one run and three hits over five innings. Hornet starter Kirsten Wise (1-4) went the distance in her second start of the season, allowing seven runs (three earned) and eight hits in six innings.

Sacramento State scored its only run of the game in the second inning on a Lori Meixner RBI-single. The Hornets had a chance to score more, but LeCocq got Arlette Sunseri to strike out and Amber Dragomir to bounce out to end the inning. Sacramento State left seven runners on base and combined to strand 15 runners in both games of the doubleheader.

Sacramento State returns to action this weekend for a three-game series at Cal Poly. The Hornets and Mustangs play a doubleheader on Saturday, April 27, at noon, and a single game Sunday, April 28, at noon.
