3/16/2002

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- After beating Utah State earlier in the day, Sacramento State was defeated by seventh-ranked Cal, 6-2, in the quarterfinals of the Capital Classic Softball Tournament Saturday afternoon at the Sacramento Softball Complex.

The Bears pounded out six runs and nine hits, including a four-run fifth inning that put the game away. Cal (28-8), which has won all five games it has played in the tournament thus far, advanced to face Wisconsin in a semifinal game Sunday morning at 9 a.m. The winner of that game will take on the Miami (Ohio)/Nebraska winner at 11 a.m. for the tournament championship.

Sacramento State (11-17 overall) finished the tournament with a 3-3 record as the team defeated IUPUI, Middle Tennessee and Utah State while falling to Virginia, UNLV and Cal.

Seven Bear starters recorded at least one hit in the contest, led by Kaleo Eldredge and Roni Rodrigues, who each finished with two. Cal starter Jocelyn Forest (11-5) picked up the win, allowing two runs and six hits in seven innings of work. The Hornets scored their only runs in the seventh inning on an two-run single by senior Cathy Coupar. Both Coupar and senior Ali Norman finished with two hits for Sacramento State as Coupar increased her career-high hitting streak to seven games.

Cal’s four-run fifth inning was highlighted by a two-run single with the bases loaded from Veronica Nelson.

The Bears had allowed just one run through their first four games of the tournament before the Hornets scored twice off them today.

Earlier this morning, Nicole Deatherage (5-2) allowed just one run and five hits in seven innings, and Yolanda Estrada hit her first career home run as the Hornets defeated Utah State, 4-2.

Tomorrow’s semifinal games (9 a.m.) of the Capital Classic consolation bracket features Utah State vs. San Jose State, and Virginia vs. Middle Tennessee. The winner of the two games will play each other at 11 a.m. for the consolation championship.
