Junior Kelli Frye had two more hits and now has a career-high seven-game hitting streak
BERKELEY, Calif. -- Jamia Reid and Britt Vonk both had a hit and a pair of RBIs to lead top-ranked Cal to an 8-0 victory over Sacramento State in a non-conference softball game Wednesday afternoon at Levine-Fricke Field.
With the win, Cal, which is ranked first in the nation in both the NFCA and ESPN.com/USA Softball Collegiate top 25 polls, improved to 30-1 with the victory. The Bears are now 48-11 all-time against Sacramento State.
The Hornets lost for just the second time in the last 12 games while falling to 17-10 overall this year. Today marked the final non-conference game of the season as Sacramento State will begin Pacific Coast Softball Conference play this weekend with a four-game series at Saint Mary’s.
The Golden Bears scored once in the first inning, three more in the second, and four in the third to accumulate enough runs to enforce the eight-run mercy rule after five innings. Cal scored its runs off Hornet right-handers Shelby Voelz and Caitlin Brooks.
The Bears’ three-run second inning was highlighted by RBI-singles from Reid and Vonk. In the four-run third inning, Reid, Vonk and Frani Echavarria each had RBIs. After Brooks allowed four runs in the third inning, she settled down to retire the Cal side in order in the fourth inning.
Sacramento State’s Kelli Frye went 2-for-2 and improved her career-high hitting streak to seven games. Frye is batting .500 (9-for-18) with four runs and three stolen bases during the hitting streak, and has now upped her season batting average to .323. Shortstop Yesenia Alcala provided the Hornets’ other hit, a leadoff single in the fifth inning.
Cal’s Valerie Arioto (14-0) picked up the win, allowing three hits while walking none and striking out six over five innings. Voelz (4-2) got the loss for the Hornets, allowing four hits and four runs (two earned) in two innings of work.
