COLBURN'S SINGLE LIFTS CAL POLY TO VICTORY OVER SOFTBALL

4/28/2002

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Joni Colburn's two-run single in the second inning lifted Cal Poly to a 3-1 victory over Sacramento State in a Big West Conference softball game Sunday afternoon at Bob Janssen Field.

With the win, the Mustangs won two of three games this weekend against the Hornets and are now 24-24 overall and 7-11 in the Big West. Sacramento State dropped to 16-29 and 5-13 in the conference.

The Hornets opened the scoring in the top of the first inning as junior Jillian Bivert hit a solo home run off Cal Poly starter Jamie Gelbart. The home run was Bivert's second of the season. Sacramento State threatened to score more in the inning but Gelbart got Erin Coyne to pop out with runners at second and third to end the inning.

Cal Poly answered back in the second as Holly Ballard started a one-out rally by doubling to left field. After Carrie Schubert walked and Nicole Dansby reached on an infield single to load the bases, Hornet starter Kirsten Wise was lifted in favor of Nicole Deatherage. After inducing Kaitlyn Wilson to pop out for the second out of the inning, Colburn laced a two-run single to right field off Deatherage scoring both Schubert and pinch runner AmyJo Nazarenus.

Cal Poly added an insurance run in the fifth inning on an RBI-single from Schubert. Gelbart held the Hornets hitless through the final six innings while allowing just one base runner during that time (a fifth-inning walk to Lori Meixner). Gelbart (8-2) allowed just one run and three hits while striking out five in seven innings of work.

Wise (1-5) picked up the loss for the Hornets, allowing two runs and two hits in 1.1 innings. Deatherage threw 5.2 innings of relief, allowing one unearned run and five hits. Besides Bivert, Meghan Cunningham and Lesley Mayhorn were the only other Hornets to finish with a hit.

Sacramento State returns to action next weekend (May 4-5) as it travels to UC Riverside for a three-game series.
