LONG BEACH STATE COMPLETES SWEEP OF SOFTBALL WITH 5-1 VICTORY

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Carrie Hamilton and Christina Zepeda each had two hits to lead Long Beach State to a 5-1 victory over Sacramento State in a Big West Conference softball game Sunday afternoon at Shea Stadium. With the victory, Long Beach State completes a three-game sweep of the Hornets as the 49ers swept the doubleheader yesterday.

Long Beach State has now won each of its last five games while improving to 35-17 overall and 13-5 in the Big West. Sacramento State dropped to 15-25 and 4-11 in the conference.

Long Beach State scored four of its five runs in the contest with two outs. During the three-game series, the 49ers hit .476 with runners in scoring position, .444 with runners on base and .444 with two outs. In yesterday's doubleheader sweep, Long Beach State scored a combined 22 runs, 12 after two outs had been recorded.

Lindsey Knoff (14-12) picked up the win for Long Beach State, allowing one run and five hits in seven innings of work. The 49ers opened the scoring in the first inning with two runs on a Jessica Smith two-run double. LBSU added another run in the second inning on a Cassie Preece RBI-single to lead, 3-0.

Sacramento State scored its only run in the third inning after a foul ball carried LBSU first baseman Hamilton into the Hornets' dugout, allowing Michelle Bariao to advance home from third base.

The 49ers put the game away in the fifth inning with two runs on RBI-singles from Hamilton and Kristina McCarty. Seven different 49ers tallied at least one hit as the team recorded nine on the day.

Alison Norman led the Hornets with two hits as the senior has now hit safely in eight of her last nine games. Junior Kirsten Wise (1-3), who started at pitcher for the first time all season, got the loss for the Hornets allowing five runs and nine hits in 4.2 innings. Nicole Deatherage threw 2.1 scoreless innings of relief.

Sacramento State, which has lost five games in a row, will play its next eight games on the road. The road trip begins at Stanford for a doubleheader on Wednesday, April 24, at 5 p.m. The Hornets then travel to Cal Poly for a three-game series over the weekend.
