SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Kelly Leos went 4-for-4, including two doubles and a home run, to lead Utah State to a 3-1 victory over Sacramento State in a Big West Conference game Sunday afternoon at Shea Stadium. With the win, the Aggies salvaged the three-game series as the Hornets swept a doubleheader between the two teams yesterday.Leos, who was a triple short of the cycle, also finished with two runs scored an RBI. Utah State''s Kristin Hommel (3-14) picked up the win, allowing one run and just four hits over seven innings. After allowing the Hornets one run and two hits in the first inning, Hommel retired 18 of the final 22 batters she faced.
Utah State picked up its first conference win of the season as the team improved to 5-37 overall and 1-11 in the Big West. Sacramento State, which had won three of its last four games, dropped to 15-21 and 4-7 in the conference.
The Aggies opened the scoring in the top of the first on a Breanne Smith RBI-single scoring Stephanie Vasarhely. The Hornets tied the game in the bottom half of the inning on an RBI-single by Jillian Bivert. The Hornets had a chance to score more in the inning, but Hommel got Yolanda Estrada to bounce out with the bases loaded.
Utah State took the lead for good in the fifth inning on an RBI-double by Heather Curtis. Leos added an insurance run with a solo homer in the seventh. Vasarhely and Curtis both finished with two hits for the Aggies.
Bivert finished the game 2-for-2 with a walk and an RBI as the junior improved her hitting streak to five games. Senior Alison Norman went 1-for-3 improving her hitting streak to five games as well.
Sophomore Nicole Deatherage, who had allowed no runs in 10.0 innings yesterday against Utah State, picked up the loss today after allowing three runs and 11 hits over seven innings. Deatherage''s record dropped to 8-4 as the right-hander had won each of her last three decisions.
The Hornets, who are in the middle of a seven-game homestand, return to action next week as the team hosts Pacific on Thursday, April 18, at 3 p.m., in a makeup game that was rained out on March 23. Sacramento State concludes the week as it hosts Long Beach State for a three-game series on Saturday-Sunday, April 20-21. The Hornets and 49ers will play a doubleheader on Saturday at noon and a single game Sunday at noon.
