SOFTBALL CONCLUDES MUSTANG CLASSIC WITH LOSS TO CAL
2/24/2008
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Valerie Arioto (3), Bernice Masaniai (2) and Sanoe Kekahuna (2) combined to drive in seven of Cal’s nine runs to lead the Golden Bears to a 9-1 victory over Sacramento State in the fourth and final round of the Mustang Softball Classic Sunday afternoon at Bob Janssen Field.
The win for Cal avenged an 8-6 loss the team suffered against Sacramento State yesterday. Despite the loss, the Hornets (4-4 overall) finished the tournament with a 3-1 record, including victories over UAB, Santa Clara and Cal. Tournament host Cal Poly, who the Hornets were supposed to play yesterday but the game was rained out, concluded the tournament with a 4-0 record and won the tourney championship.
Originally, Sacramento State was supposed to play UAB this morning at 9 a.m., but yesterday afternoon’s rains changed the schedule for today.
Cal pitcher Marissa Drewrey (6-3) allowed the Hornets just one run and four hits over five innings, as the game was stopped after five because the Bears’ 9-1 lead was enough to enforce the eight-run mercy rule. Amy Tompkins, Jamie Schloredt, Amanda Meyer and Hilary Johnson were the only Hornets with a hit, as Sherry Clark and Whitney Loomis saw their seven-game hitting streaks come to an end.
Cal scored two runs in the first, and tacked on seven more in the third inning. Sacramento State starter Kayla Meeks (2-2) got the loss, allowing three hits and two runs over 2.0 innings. Freshman Jacquelyn Serrano pitched just two-thirds of an inning, and gave up one hit, five walks and seven runs, though only one of those runs were earned. Sophomore Brittani Clifford pitched the final 1.1 innings, allowing no runs and no hits.
Sacramento State returns to action for the softball version of the Causeway Classic when the team plays a doubleheader at UC Davis this Wednesday, Feb. 27, at 1 p.m.
