SOFTBALL TAKES 3-1 SERIES VICTORY OVER SAN DIEGO WITH SUNDAY’S SPLIT

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Sophomore Jamie Schloredt went 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs to lead Sacramento State to a 7-1 victory over San Diego in the first game of a Pacific Coast Softball Conference (PCSC) doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Shea Stadium. Christina Haake allowed just one run and three hits over seven innings to lift San Diego to a 3-1 victory in the second game.
With the split, Sacramento State moved its record to 17-32 overall and 8-7 in the PCSC. The Hornets swept a doubleheader from the Toreros yesterday and won the four game series, 3-1. San Diego moved its record to 22-24 and 6-10 in the conference with today’s split.
Sacramento State concludes the 2007 season next weekend with a four-game home series against Saint Mary’s. The Hornets have yet to finish with a conference record below the .500 mark since the PCSC formed in 2003, and Sacramento State will attempt to keep that streak alive next weekend.
With two victories today over Saint Mary’s, Loyola Marymount (14-2) clinched the PCSC championship and will receive the league’s automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.
Today’s performance by Schloredt capped a brilliant four-game series in which the sophomore batted .636 (7-for-11) with three doubles, two home runs and six RBIs. Schloredt also accounted for the Hornets’ only run with another homer in today’s 3-1 loss in the nightcap.
Equally impressive was Hornet sophomore Kayla Meeks, who combined with today’s victory in game one, concluded the series 2-0 with a 1.08 ERA.
In today’s first game, Meeks and Torero starter Jennifer Ellenbeck were locked in scoreless tie until the third inning when Amy Jo McKenzie’s two-run single scored both Keri Elias and Amy Tompkins.
Sacramento State then tacked on four runs in the top of the fourth in which the Hornets sent all nine batters to the plate. After Meeks grounded out to start the inning, Sherry Clark and Elias each walked. Hilary Johnson then singled to score Clark. Tompkins followed with a single to load the bases. Whitney Loomis then hit a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Elias with Johnson going to third. Schloredt followed a wrining double to right center, scoring both Johnson and Tompkins.
The Hornets added one more run in the sixth after Schloredt hit a solo home run. San Diego scored its lone run in the sixth inning when Kathleen Bonja led off with a home run to left.
Joining Schloredt with multipl-hit games for the Hornets were Tompkins (3-for-5, two runs) and McKenzie (2-for-4, 2 RBI. Elias was 1-for-2, however, she reached base three times after drawing two walks and scoring twice.
Meeks (10-12) picked up the win, allowing 10 hits and one run over 7.0 innings. The sophomore also struck out three, and has now won eight of her last 13 decisions. Ellenbeck (9-6) took the loss, allowing seven hits and six runs (all earned) over 3.2 innings. The Hornet defense was impressive in the game as the team turned two double plays.
In the second game, San Diego got on the board first when Bonja hit her second homer of the day, a two-out solo shot off Hornet starter Jennifer Fryou to give the Toreros a 1-0 lead.
The Hornets tied things in the third after Schloredt pounced on a Haake fast ball, and sent a home run soaring over the Shea Stadium scoreboard.
The Toreros, however, took advantage of Hornet errors which led to unearned runs in both the fourth and fifth innings to take a 3-1 lead.
Sacramento State loaded the bases with one out in the sixth, but Haake got McKenzie to bounce into a fielder choice that got Johnson thrown out at the plate, and Miles grounded out to end the inning.
After giving up a lead-off single to Tompkins to start the game, Haake then retired the next 10 Hornet batters in a row until Schloredt hit the home run. Haake (9-9) went the distance, allowing just three hits while walking one and striking out four.
Fryou (2-5) was effective but took the loss, allowing five hits and three runs (only one earned) in 5.0 innings of work. Freshman Brittani Clifford threw a scoreless sixth inning.
Sacramento State will return to action next Saturday, May 5, as the Hornets open a four-game seires with a doubleheader against Saint Mary’s at noon. The two teams will also play a doubleheader on Sunday at noon.
