SOFTBALL GAINS SPLIT IN FINAL DAY OF THE PACIFIC ROUND ROBIN

STOCKTON, Calif. -- Sophomore Whitney Loomis had four hits over two games, including a walkoff RBI-single to defeat UNLV, as Sacramento State posted a 1-1 record in the second and final day of the Pacific Softball Round Robin Sunday afternoon at Bill Simoni Field.
The Hornets won their first game of the day, 4-3, over UNLV before falling to Pacific, 9-1, in five innings. Sacramento State completed the two-day tournament with a 1-3 record as the Hornets lost to both teams yesterday. Sacramento State is now 8-21 and has just one more non-conference game at Nevada on Thursday, March 29, before opening Pacific Coast Softball Conference play on April 6-7 against defending PCSC champions Portland State.
UNLV dropped to 24-15 with the loss to the Hornets, and Pacific improved its record to 21-11 with the victory.
In today’s against UNLV, Sacramento State had 11 hits, capped off by a two-run bottom of the seventh to give the Hornets a 4-3 victory. Sacramento State received two hits each from Amy Tompkins, Kayla Meeks, Melissa Cross and Loomis. None were bigger than Loomis’ two-out, walkoff RBI-single scoring Andrea Sherrill which gave Sacramento State the victory.
The Hornets scored single runs in the first and second innings after wild pitches scored Tompkins and Rachel Miles, respectively. UNLV answered with one run in he fifth, sixth and seventh innings, including a solo home run by Jaci Hull in the top of the seventh to give the Rebels their first lead of the game.
Meeks, who went seven strong innings to pick up the victory, also homered to lead off the bottom of the seventh and tie the game at 3-3. A UNLV error and singles from Sherrill and Melissa Cross quickly loaded the bases with no outs. UNLV relief pitcher Christie Robinson then got two quick outs before Loomis stepped to the plate and singled to center field to score Sherrill from third.
Meeks (4-8) allowed three runs (two earned) and six hits over seven innings to pick up her second victory in the last three starts. UNLV starter Heather Slettvet (6-5) got the loss, allowing four runs (three earned) and nine hits over six innings.
In the game against Pacific, the Tigers scored one run in the first, six more in the second and two in the third as the game was called after five innings because of the eight-run mercy rule. Sacramento State starter Michele Bochenski was touched for seven runs, three hits and three walks in one-plus inning as the Tigers were already leading 7-0 before relief pitcher Jennifer Fryou was inserted into the game.
The Tigers’ Nos. 1-4 hitters combined for six RBIs, including two each from Gina Carbonatto and Lizzie Hagen. Chelsea Engle (11-7) picked up her second victory in as many days against the Hornets, allowing just four hits and one unearned run in five innings.
Loomis finished 2-for-2 and was the only Hornet with more than one hit in the game as Sacramento State was limited to just four hits over five innings. Bochenski (2-6) got the loss for Sacramento State, while Fryou allowed two runs and three hits in three innings of relief.
