SOFTBALL PUMMELS UC DAVIS IN DOUBLEHEADER SWEEP

2/25/2006

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Sacramento State’s offense combined for 19 runs, 20 hits and a .547 slugging percentage on the way to a softball doubleheader sweep of UC Davis Saturday afternoon at Shea Stadium. After the Hornets won the first game, 5-1, the team came back in the nightcap to record a season-high 14 runs in a 14-4 victory.

With the victories, Sacramento State has now defeated UC Davis on nine-straight occasions dating back to 2004 season. The Hornets, who were playing just their third and fourth home games of the season, improved to 6-9 with the victories. Of the Hornets’ nine losses, four have come against teams ranked in the top 10 and three have come by one run. UC Davis dropped to 4-9 with the losses.

Six different Hornet starters combined to hit .400 or better in the doubleheader, comprised of sophomore Hilary Johnson (.500, 3-for-6 with a walk, two stolen bases and three runs), senior Gloria Toledo (.500, 3-for-6 with two runs), freshman Jamie Schloredt (.500, 2-for-4 with a home run, three walks and three RBIs), senior Lindy Winkler (.429, 3-for-7 with three runs, two stolen bases and an RBI), freshman Rachel Miles (.429, 3-for-7 with two runs, a double and five RBIs) and sophomore Teri Ann Caoagan (.400, 2-for-5 with an RBI). Junior Amy Jo McKenzie added a double, a home run, an .857 slugging percentage and four RBIs.

Sacramento State starter Nikki Cinque (3-5) dominated in the first game, allowing the Aggies just three hits and one unearned run in seven innings. The senior struck out eight batters and faced just six batters over the minimum. The highlight of the first game was Schloredt’s second home run of the season, a three-run towering blow over the left-center field fence to give the Hornets a 3-0 first-inning lead. That was more than enough for Cinque as the Hornets tacked one run in the third (RBI-double from McKenzie) and one more in the fourth (Winkler scored on a throwing error).

The Hornets battered UC Davis pitchers Rachel Kelly, Christina Grimm and Lauren Pieretti for 14 runs and 11 hits in the second game. Including a 10-run third inning, Sacramento State scored in all four innings it had an at-bat as the eight-run mercy rule ended the game after UC Davis batted in the top of the fifth.

Sacramento State’s 10-run inning was highlighted by a two-run double from sophomore Amy Tompkins which missed clearing the fence for a home run by inches, a three-run double from Miles, and a three-run home run by McKenzie. The homer for McKenzie was the second of her career and she now leads the Hornets with a .571 slugging percentage this season.

The Hornets scored once in the first inning, twice in the second, 10 times in the third and once more in the fourth inning. Miles had all five of her RBIs during the doubleheader in the second game. Junior Michele Bochenski (3-1) picked up the win for Sacramento State, allowing four runs (three earned) and seven hits in five innings.

Miles extended her hitting streak to seven games, and McKenzie and Winkler both extended their hitting streaks to six games.

The Hornets will take the next two weeks off before travelling to Sunnyvale, Calif., to take part in the National Invitational Softball Tournament (NIST), hosted by San Jose State on March 10-12. Sacramento State will take on Nevada (4 p.m.) and Oregon (6 p.m.) on Friday, March 10, before entering bracket play on Saturday and Sunday.
