SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Freshman Jamie Schloredt tallied two doubles, a home run and five RBIs in the second game to lead Sacramento State to a softball doubleheader split with Nevada Tuesday afternoon at Shea Stadium. Nevada won the first game, 5-3, before the Hornets came back to win the nightcap, 11-6.With the split, Sacramento State moved its record to 4-7 overall this season and 13-4 all-time against the Wolf Pack. Nevada is now 4-5. Today’s doubleheader marked the home opener for Sacramento State.
After hitting her first career home run in the third inning, Schloredt came back in the fifth inning to club a three-run double that helped the Hornets erase a 6-3 deficit. Sacramento State eventually took the lead in the inning after sophomore Amy Tompkins singled home Schloredt.
Senior Gloria Toledo added insurance in the bottom of the sixth with a three-run double. She came all the way around to score on the same play after a Nevada throwing error allowed her to cross the plate. Schloredt finished the game 3-for-5 with three runs, an intentional walk and five RBIs while Toledo went 2-for-3 with a run and three RBIs. The Hornets’ 11 runs and 12 hits were both season highs.
Hornet starter Michele Bochenksi (2-0) went the distance to pick up her second victory of the season. The Reno, Nev., native allowed six runs (five earned) and 12 hits in seven innings. Nevada’s Jordan McPherson (3-2) got the loss in relief, allowing five hits and five runs (four earned) in two innings.
In the first game, Nevada jumped out to a 3-0 lead behind the bat of Brittany Puzey as she singled home a run in the first, and doubled in two more runs in the third inning. Sacramento State answered with two runs in the bottom of the third after junior Amy Jo McKenzie’s RBI-double scored Lindy Winkler and senior Nikki Cinque’s ground ball scored Schloredt from third.
The Wolf Pack took advantage of two Hornet errors in the sixth to score two runs and take a commanding 5-2 lead. Sacramento State got one more run in the seventh on an RBI-single from sophomore Hilary Johnson which scored Winkler.
McPherson picked up the victory, allowing six hits and three runs in seven innings. Cinque dropped to 2-4 with the loss as she gave up eight hits and five runs (three earned) with seven strikeouts in seven innings. Puzey finished the game 3-for-4 with a run, two doubles and three RBIs.
Winkler and Johnson each had two hits for the Hornets in the first game and combined to finish the doubleheader with three and four hits, respectively.
Sacramento State returns to action on Friday, Feb. 24, as the team travels to Berkeley to take on eighth-ranked Cal at noon. The Hornets return home on Saturday, Feb. 25, as they host UC Davis for a doubleheader at noon.
