SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Sophomore Amy Tompkins hit her first career home run and 12 different Hornets had RBIs as Sacramento State scored a Div. I program-record tying 16 runs in a 16-1 rout of Miami University Saturday evening in the third round of the Capital Classic Softball Tournament.The 16 runs tied the team’s Div. I record (1990-pres.), matching single-game performances in 1992 and 1994. Sacramento State scored two times in the first inning, one more in the second and 13 times in the fourth inning. The Hornets batted around twice in the fourth, sending 20 batters to the plate. The addition of assistant head coach Cara Hoyt continues to pay dividends as the team is now batting .273 this season. Since joining the Div. I ranks, the Hornets have never hit better than .265.
With the victory, the Hornets have won four in a row and 10 of their last 11 games. Sacramento State is 3-0 at the Capital Classic and 14-10 overall this season. The team has one tournament game remaining on Sunday, March 19, against Utah State at 11 a.m.
With a win against Utah State, Sacramento State will have a perfect 4-0 record at the tournament, and the opportunity to win the championship depending on tiebreakers and the outcome of other games. Sacramento State, Cal, Colorado State, Wisconsin and Princeton are each 3-0 heading into the tournament’s final day.
Senior Nikki Cinque (7-6), who picked up the win, allowed just one run and six hits in five innings. She also tallied a game-high three RBIs. Cinque now has nine RBIs in her last three games, and has a career-high seven-game hitting streak. Senior Lindy Winkler finished 2-for-3 with a double, a walk and an RBI, and extended her hitting streak to a career-high 15 games.
Winkler, Cinque, Tompkins, Kayla Williams, Jamie Schloredt, Joanna O’Neill, Gloria Toledo, Amy Jo McKenzie, Rachel Miles, Britany Crine, Danielle Ackland and Whitney Loomis each had RBIs for the Hornets.
Miami University, which hails from Oxford, Ohio, used three pitchers during the game.
A total of eight games remain in Capital Classic Tournament play, with four taking place tomorrow at 9 a.m., and four more at 11 a.m. Sacramento State is seeking its first Capital Classic championship since 1996.
