SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Sacramento State’s seven-game winning streak was snapped on Sunday afternoon at Shea Stadium, suffering a 10-3 loss to Pacific in the first game, before falling 6-1 in the second game.Sacramento State falls to 17-12 on the season, while Pacific improves to 17-13.
Freshman pitcher Cassie Cervantes (5-4) took the loss in the first game after allowing four runs on one hit and six walks. The Red Bluff, Calif., native recorded five strikeouts, but couldn’t get out of trouble in the third inning, surrendering four runs on two hits and one error.
The Tigers outhit the Hornets 14-6 in the game, led by left fielder Brittany Hyams, who was 3-for-5 with two runs and one RBI. Pacific shortstop Lizzie Hagen was 2-for-3 with four RBIs.
Michele Bochenski entered the game in relief of Cervantes in the third inning and allowed six runs on 13 hits the rest of the way. Pacific put up five runs on six hits in the sixth inning to put things out of reach.
Prior to the Tigers offensive burst in the sixth, Sacramento State cut Pacific’s lead to 6-3 after five. In the fourth Niki Cinque and Amy Tompkins recorded RBI-singles and in the fifth inning, Ashley Dawson scored the Hornets’ third run on Jamie Schloredt’s RBI- double.
Schloredt led the Hornet going 2-for-3 from the plate.
Pacific’s Briana Santos pitched 5.0 innings in the win, allowing three runs on six hits while recording four strikeouts.
In the second game, Pacific again used an early lead to gain the advantage. The Tigers scored four runs on four hits and two errors in the first inning.
Cinque (8-7) took the loss after pitching 5.0 innings and surrendering six runs (four earned) on eight hits.
Tigers’ pitcher Kristen Allen (1-3) earned the win after pitching 5.1 innings and allowing one run on six hits. At the plate, Allen was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and one run.
The Hornets’ solo run came in the bottom of the sixth when center fielder Lindy Winkler led off the inning with a triple. It was the fourth triple of the year for Winkler. The San Andreas, Calif., native later scored on Hilary Johnson’s RBI-single.
Sacramento State will next travel to Nevada for a doubleheader on Tuesday with first pitch scheduled for noon.
