WINKLER EXTENDS HITTING STREAK TO SCHOOL-RECORD 18 GAMES AS SOFTBALL SWEEPS PRINCETON
SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Sacramento State starting pitchers Cassie Cervantes and Nikki Cinque each pitched a shutout, and senior Lindy Winkler extended her hitting streak to a school-record 18 games as the Hornets swept a non-conference softball doubleheader from Princeton Wednesday afternoon at Shea Stadium. Sacramento State won the first game, 5-0, before taking the nightcap, 4-0.With the victories, Sacramento State (17-10) has now won seven in a row and 13 of the last 14 games. During the 14-game span, the Hornets have clubbed 11 home runs and are hitting .321. The pitching staff has also thrived over the 14-game stretch, posting an ERA of 0.79 with 137 strikeouts in 97.0 innings.
The Hornets’ 17-10 record is the team’s best mark after 27 games since the 2003 team was also 17-10 at the same point in the season. With the losses, Princeton dropped to 7-6. The Tigers just went undefeated (4-0) at the Capital Classic this past weekend.
With a triple in both games today, Winkler extended her hitting streak to school-record 18 games, surpassing the previous mark of 17, set by Katie Cichy in 1998. During the hitting streak, Winkler is batting .483 (28-58) with 21 runs scored, six doubles, three triples, two home runs, eight walks and seven RBIs. In addition, she upped her season average to a team-best .407.
In the first game, the tandem of Cervantes and freshman catcher Jamie Schloredt powered Sacramento State to the victory. Schloredt accounted for the Hornets’ first four runs of the game, crushing a two-run homer in the first inning, and connecting for a two-run double in the third which scored junior Ashley Dawson and sophomore Amy Tompkins.
The Hornets tacked on another run in the fifth after Tompkins singled home Winkler, who had tripled to lead off the inning. Schloredt finished the game 2-for-4 with a run and four RBIs, and now has a team-leading four home runs and 22 RBIs this season. The freshman’s four home runs are already two less than Sacramento State hit as a team all of last season. Tompkins finished the game 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI.
Cervantes (5-3) won her fifth-consecutive start, allowing just one bunt single while striking out 12 batters. The Red Bluff, Calif., native threw her second-consecutive shutout and third in her last four starts. Cervantes continued an amazing run that has seen the flame thrower go 5-0 with a 0.18 ERA in her last five starts. That includes 78 strikeouts in 39.0 innings pitched, and opponents have not recorded more than four hits in any of those games.
In the nightcap, Cinque allowed just three hits while striking out seven to notch her third shutout of the season. Seniors Britany Crine and Gloria Toledo combined to go 6-for-6 with four runs scored, three doubles, a triple and three RBIs. Crine’s three hits and three RBIs were both career highs as she clubbed two doubles and a triple. In fact, every time Crine stepped to the plate during the game, she recorded an RBI.
Cinque (8-6) won for the sixth time in her last seven decisions. In addition, she has allowed one run or less in six of her last seven starts. Cinque’s season ERA dropped to 1.33 and opponents are batting just .215 off the right-hander this year.
As a team, Sacramento State has hit at least one home run in 10 of the last 14 games, and now has 12 home runs this season. The Hornets’ Div. I era record (1990-pres.) for most homers in a season is 16 (set in 1998) and this year’s team is quickly approaching that mark.
Sacramento State returns to action on Saturday, March 25, as the team hosts Pacific for a doubleheader beginning at noon. That doubleheader will conclude a streak of 10-consecutive games in which the team will play in Sacramento. Moreover, the Hornets do not play a game outside of California during the entire month of March.
