STRAHAN EARNS MILESTONE AND CINQUE DEALS NO-HITTER IN SWEEP OF UTAH VALLEY STATE

3/16/2005

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Sacramento State head coach Kathy Strahan picked up her 600th career victory and junior right-hander Nikki Cinque threw a no-hitter to highlight the Hornets’ doubleheader sweep of Utah Valley State on Wednesday afternoon at Shea Stadium. The Hornets won the first game, 6-0, before taking the second game by the score of 3-0.

In her 22nd year as a collegiate head coach and 13th season at Sacramento State, Strahan ranks among the nation’s leaders in career wins and now has a record of 601-575-3. Under Strahan’s guidance, the Hornets have won 354 games, and her teams have increased their win total each of the last four years.

Sacramento State combined for nine runs and 21 hits in the doubleheader while Utah Valley State was limited to no runs and just one hit during the two games. The Hornets improved to 6-2 at home this season and 15-11 overall. Utah Valley State dropped to 8-14 with the losses.

Sacramento State’s pitching was dominant as senior Brianne Ferguson allowed just one hit while striking out five in six innings, sophomore Jennifer Fryou pitched a perfect seventh inning in the first game, and Cinque completed the day with her first no-hitter in a Sacramento State uniform.

In the nightcap, Cinque (7-3, 1.06 ERA) faced just one batter over the minimum while walking none and striking out four. In fact, Cinque would have recorded a perfect game had it not been for two Hornet errors during the contest. One of the runners was quickly erased on a double play. The shutout for Cinque was her team-best fourth of the season as the Sacramento, Calif., native has limited opponents to just a .200 batting average this season. Senior Erin Coyne’s first-inning, two-run homer was all the offense Cinque would need as the Wolverines could not push a runner past first base.

Sacramento State’s offense broke out of its slump in a major was as the team’s 13 hits in the first game were a season high. Over the last three games, the Hornets have combined for 16 runs and 27 hits to raise the squad’s season average to .230. During the doubleheader, both senior Erin Coyne (4-for-6 with a double, home run and three RBIs) and junior Lindy Winkler (4-for-7 with two triples, two runs and an RBI) had four hits. Seniors Amy Hillel (3-for-3 with an RBI) and Lesley Mayhorn (3-for-6 with a double and an RBI) added three hits, while Gloria Toledo and Hilary Johnson each had two.

Since beginning the season with just two hits in her first 19 at-bats, Hillel has been on a tear over her last 14 games, batting .375 (15-40) over that span to lift her season batting average to .288. Winkler continues to be the Hornets’ offensive catalyst as the center fielder is now batting a team-best .407.

In the first game of the double dip, Ferguson allowed just one infield hit while striking out five in six innings. Ferguson (8-5, 0.94 ERA) had faced the minimum number of batters through the first five innings before allowing the infield hit that barely glanced off Emily Cardenas’ bat for a single. Fryou pitched a perfect seventh inning in relief.

Sacramento State had at least one hit in every inning, scoring one run in the first (Coyne RBI-single), two in the second (RBI-triple from Toledo and an RBI-single from Ferguson), one more in the third (RBI-single from Hillel), and two in the sixth (Mayhorn RBI-double and an RBI-single from Winkler).

The Hornets return to action this Friday-Sunday, March 18-20, when the team hosts Capital Classic at the Sacramento Softball Complex. Sacramento State will play five games during the three-day tournament, including games Friday against BYU (10 a.m.) and Illinois (3 p.m.).
