SUNNYVALE, Calif. - The Sacramento State softball team combined for just three runs and nine hits in two games as the Hornets lost to both second-ranked Cal and host San Jose State on the second day of the National Invitational Softball Tournament Saturday afternoon at the Twin Creeks Sports Complex.Cal, which advanced to tomorrow’s championship game against Arizona State, defeated the Hornets, 8-1. San Jose State beat the Hornets, 3-2, and improved its record against Sacramento State to 3-0 this season.
Sacramento State, which dropped to 1-3 at the three-day, five-game tournament, will face UC Davis for the sixth time this season tomorrow to conclude the tournament. The Hornets (12-11) have now lost eight of their last 12 games after beginning the season with an 8-3 record.
In the Hornets’ first game of the day, Cal pounded out eight runs and six hits and took advantage of four Hornet errors to go onto the easy victory. The Golden Bears scored three runs in the first, one in the third, three more in the sixth, and one in the seventh. All three Sacramento State pitchers appeared in the game as starter Brianne Ferguson (6-5) got the loss, allowing three runs (all unearned) and one hit in two innings. Nikki Cinque threw two innings and Jennifer Fryou pitched the final three frames.
The lone bright spot for the Hornets in the game was Lesley Mayhorn’s solo home run off Cal pitcher Kristina Thorson. Mayhorn’s home run was the second of her career and the first hit by a Sacramento State player this year. Junior Lindy Winkler finished the game 2-for-3, marking the only Hornet with a multiple-hit game.
Four different Cal players had at least one RBI, led by Emily Friedman’s two RBIs. Thorson improved to 10-0 this season after allowing Sacramento State one run and five hits over seven innings.
In the Hornets’ game against San Jose State, Elisa Barrios’ two-run homer in the fifth inning proved to be the game winner as the Hornets could not score again after posting two runs in the first inning.
Gloria Toledo’s two-run double in the first accounted for all of the Hornets’ runs as San Jose State pitchers Janeille Nickels (3.1 innings pitched) and Carol Forbes (3.2 innings pitched) combined to limit Sacramento State to just two unearned runs and four hits.
San Jose State got a run back in the bottom of the second on a leadoff home run by Sarah Smith. The Spartans took the lead for good in the fifth after Barrios’ two-out, two-run homer scored Courtney Lewis.
Forbes (12-8) retired the final seven Hornets in order to pick up the victory. Forbes improved her record to 3-0 against Sacramento State this season, allowing just one run and seven hits in 16.2 combined innings.
Senior Amy Hillel paced Sacramento State’s offense with two hits.
The Hornets will try to improve their record against UC Davis to 6-0 tomorrow.
