FERGUSON’S NO-HITTER HIGHLIGHTS SOFTBALL’S SWEEP OF UC DAVIS

3/3/2005

DAVIS, Calif. -- Senior pitcher Brianne Ferguson tossed her first career no-hitter and junior pitcher Nikki Cinque followed with eight solid innings to lead Sacramento State to a doubleheader softball sweep of UC Davis Thursday afternoon at LaRue Field. The Hornets won the first game, 3-0, before taking the nightcap, 2-1, in eight innings.

With the sweep, Sacramento State improved to 11-6 overall this season, including a perfect 5-0 against UC Davis. The no-hitter for the Hornets was the team’s first since Nicole Deatherage blanked Long Island (March 19, 2004) last season at the Capital Classic. The Hornets also picked up their first two road victories of the season as the team improved to 2-3.

Ferguson allowed just one ball out of the infield as the senior right-hander struck out three while walking two over seven innings. She allowed a first and fourth inning walk, and hit a batter in the seventh for her only blemishes of the game. Ferguson faced just three batters over the minimum while retiring nine batters in a row at one point during the contest. The Ceres, Calif., native improved to 6-2 this season and lowered her ERA to 0.65.

Sacramento State got its first run in the third inning on a two-out RBI-single from senior Erin Coyne, and tacked on two more in the sixth on an RBI-double from freshman Teri Ann Caoagan and a wild pitch which eventually allowed Caoagan to score later in the inning. The Hornets got two hits apiece from both Lindy Winkler (2-for-4) and Amy Hillel (2-for-2 with a walk).

Jessica Hancock (1-5) picked up the loss for UC Davis, allowing three runs and six hits in seven innings.

In the second game, Cinque (5-1) missed her third shutout of the season after allowing a run to score on a wild pitch with two outs in the eighth inning. The right-hander allowed just one unearned run and two hits in eight innings as she has now won five-straight decisions after losing her first outing of the season. In addition, Cinque, who lowered her ERA to 0.84, has now pitched 42.0-consecutive innings (spanning seven appearances) without allowing an earned run.

The game remained scoreless for the first seven innings as UC Davis had a chance to score in the fourth inning, but center fielder Winkler threw out Nikki Sheldon at the plate trying to score from second base on a single.

The Hornets got their two runs in the top of the eighth inning on a clutch two-out, two-run single from Lesley Mayhorn which scored Hilary Johnson and Gloria Toledo. Mayhorn finished the game with two hits to lead all players.

UC Davis’ Lindsay Tognetti (0-6) got the loss despite allowing just two unearned runs and four hits while striking out 10 over eight innings.

Sacramento State, which is 4-0 at home this season, returns to action this Saturday, March 5, as the team hosts San Jose State for a doubleheader which begins at noon. The Hornets have swept home doubleheaders this season against UC Davis and Nevada.
