SOFTBALL HIT HARD IN LOSS TO CAL POLY

2/5/2005

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Host Cal Poly pounded out 10 runs and eight hits on the way to a 10-0 blanking of Sacramento State in the fourth round of the Mustang Roundup Saturday night at Bob Janssen Field. The Mustangs, who improved to 4-0 at the tournament, scored four runs in the second, one more in the third and five in the fourth to institute the eight-run mercy rule in the fifth inning.

The Hornets dropped to 2-2 at the tournament as Sacramento State was coming off a 1-0 shutout of Nevada earlier in the day. The tournament marks the first games of the season for Sacramento State as the team returns to action tomorrow (Sunday, Feb. 6) to face Cal Poly again at 2 p.m.

All but two Cal Poly starters had at least one hit in the game as the Mustangs pounded Hornet starter Jennifer Fryou in her four innings of work. Erin Myers went 2-for-3 with a home run, two runs and two RBIs while Jackie Gehrke-Jones went 1-for-2 including a three-run triple in the second inning. Kelly Comstock, Chelsea Green and AmyJo Nazarenus also had an RBI for Cal Poly, which sent eight batters to the plate in a five-run fourth inning.

Cal Poly’s Eva Nelson (2-0) got the win, allowing just three hits while striking out five in five innings of work. Ashley Dawson, Lindy Winkler and Britany Crine each had singles for the Hornets as Winkler has now hit safely in each of the last three games.

Sacramento State’s Nos. 6-9 hitters combined to go 0-for-8 as Sacramento State is now batting .200 as a team this year.

After tomorrow’s game concludes the Hornets’ schedule for the week, the team is back in action on Wednesday, Feb. 9, for its home opener against UC Davis at 1 p.m.
